Gerland demands Bayern talent Wanner: Now you have to deliver!

Hermann Gerland, the coach of the German U21 national team, recently had clear words about Paul Wanner, the 19-year-old talent from FC Bayern Munich. Gerland was positive about the young player's great potential, even comparing it to his own career. After an instructive season at 1. FC Heidenheim, where Wanner played on loan and made a significant contribution to staying in the league, he is hoping to be called up to the national team. Gerland is convinced that Wanner has to have the right attitude in order to prevail. As Merkur reports, Gerland spoke directly to Wanner in the Bayern professionals' dressing room and encouraged him to make full use of his abilities and decide games.

At that moment, Thomas Müller, a rock of the Bayern game, intervened and wanted to prevent Gerland from being too critical of Wanner. Müller, himself known for his leadership qualities, asked for moderation, but Gerland stuck to his opinion and emphasized the importance of speaking honestly. In his opinion, it is essential that Wanner is told the truth and that he remains capable of learning. “We have to tell the children the truth,” said Gerland. The coach sees Wanner as a talent of the century who now has to deliver, especially since he can shine in a training tournament under the eyes of the national coaches, as FCBinside describes.

Talent in the spotlight

At the age of 19, Gerland himself has already played over 100 games for Bayern and knows the demands of professional football very well. It's no secret that expectations for Wanner are high. Not only was he considered a potential player for the German national team, but he could also play for Austria if he so decides in the future squad selection. However, Gerland warns: “You shouldn’t just choose another country if it doesn’t work out in Germany.”

Wanner currently remains unfazed by the pressure on him. The talented player decided not to play in the Club World Cup because he would instead like to take part in the European Championships in Slovakia with the German U21 national team. “That was my wish from the start because I feel comfortable in this team,” said Wanner. It remains to be seen whether he will be loaned out again next season or whether he will stay at FC Bayern.

A look into the future

In the fast-paced world of football, every step has consequences. Wanner now has to show that he can handle the pressure and is ready to prove himself on the big stage. In addition, Gerland made comparisons in his statements with reference to other talents such as Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala and put his finger on the wound - in order not to keep his expectations of Wanner hidden.

The coming time is likely to be crucial for the young player. As the coach so beautifully put it: “If I had Paul Wanner’s talent…”. Then nothing stands in the way of a breakthrough. It remains to be seen how the whole drama surrounding Wanner will develop and whether he can live up to the high expectations.
