An important step in the preparation for the World Games 2029 was recently taken in Karlsruhe. Joachim Gossow, CEO of the International World Games Association (IWGA), had clear words for the delegation that entered into negotiations with Mayor Frank Mentrup. Gossow warned against copying the Chengdu Games and recalled that Germany can score through its citizens' passion for sport. He emphasized this in the signed agreement, as DOSB reported.
The focus of the discussions was on Germany's professionalism as host of the World Games, which was impressively demonstrated in 1989 in Karlsruhe and 2005 in Duisburg. IWGA President José Perurena expressed optimism about the planned event and emphasized that he has high expectations for the 2029 Games. “Germany has a good knack for such events,” he added.
Funding and support
During the meeting, Mayor Mentrup made an appeal for support from all of German sport. He pointed out the still open question of the federal government taking over the financing. His comments show respect for the high organizational effort involved in such a major event.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Culture, Youth and Sport in Baden-Württemberg, Theresa Schopper, emphasized the importance of the games for the population and assured support from the state ministry. Christiane Schenderlein, the Minister of State for Sport and Volunteering in the Federal Chancellery, was also open to increasing funding in the area of non-Olympic sports. She pointed out the importance of diversity in sport.
Location and orientation
The competitions will take place not only in Karlsruhe, but also throughout the region and possibly in the neighboring French city of Strasbourg. This could attract additional international attention and promote cultural exchange.
