RB Leipzig, Gladbach and Bochum: DFB Cup sensation in the round of 16!
Yesterday's games in the second round of the DFB Cup provided exciting moments. There were large numbers of fans in the stands and the football was played at a high level. Four teams have qualified for the next round, including defending champions RB Leipzig.
In an impressive game, RB Leipzig beat Energie Cottbus 4-1. The leader since the 13th minute was Johan Bakayoko, who scored the first goal. Christoph Baumgartner made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, before making it 3-0 just nine minutes later after a clever free kick. With another goal from Ezekiel Banzuzi in the 59th minute it looked like a clear affair. Gladbach on course
Borussia Mönchengladbach was also convincing and defeated Karlsruher SC 3-1. Shuto Machino scored the first goal in the 3rd minute, ensuring an ideal start. Nico Elvedi extended the lead with a header in the 52nd minute, before Fabian Schleusener was able to reduce the score to 2-1 in the 59th minute. Haris Tabakovic finally made the final score 3-1 in the 89th minute and secured a place in the next round.
Bochum brings home the points
VfL Bochum prevailed against FC Augsburg with a narrow but decisive 1-0. Gerrit Holtmann scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute, ensuring Bochum's place in the next round. Another success that fuels hope for more in the DFB Cup.
Tension until the last minute
The duel between FC St. Pauli and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim couldn't have been more exciting: after 120 minutes the score was 2-2 and the game had to go to penalties. Hauke Wahl gave St. Pauli the lead with a header in the first minute before Grischa Prömel equalized in the 47th minute. Hoffenheim turned the game around in the 107th minute with a penalty from Andrej Kramaric, but Mathias Pereira Lage saved St. Pauli in stoppage time with his goal in the 120th +2 minute. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Kramaric and Albian Hajdari were unable to convert for Hoffenheim, while St. Pauli only had one missed shot and thus moved into the next round.
