Recall from dm: Dangerous hand serum could cause infections!

The drugstore chain dm has initiated a recall for the product “Balea Handserum Hyaluron” (75 ml). This step was taken for “reasons of preventive consumer protection” in view of a possible microbiological contamination with the yeast *Candida parapsilosis*, as Merkur reports. Customers are urged to stop using the product and instead return it to their dm stores.

Although dm classifies the health risk as low, there is a risk of infections, particularly for immunocompromised people, which can range from wound and tissue infections to life-threatening sepsis. Affected batches have the code 58309 and have been sold throughout Germany, which is why extreme caution is required, especially among vulnerable groups of people.

Details about the recall

The affected hand serum was immediately withdrawn from sale. Customers can return the product, whether unopened or opened, to any dm branch. The purchase price is fully refunded even without a receipt, which makes returns easier for customers. If you have any questions, you can contact the dm service center on 0800 365 8633 or send an email to servicecenter@dm.de for further information on how [Ruhr24].

The risks caused by *Candida parapsilosis* should not be underestimated. Although this yeast is usually harmless and part of the human microflora, it can cause serious health problems in weakened immune systems. According to the Robert Koch Institute, under appropriate conditions, infections can occur ranging from oral thrush to invasive diseases in which fungi get into the blood and can have serious consequences. The incidence rate of candida infections is not negligible in Europe, and a mortality rate of 30-40% for candidaemia shows the seriousness of this issue, as [RKI](https://www.rki.de/DE/Themen/Infectious Diseases/Infectious Diseases-A-Z/P/Pilzreinigungen/Candida_spp.html) emphasizes.

This is not DM's first recall due to microbiological concerns. Most recently, a cashew butter and an organic breakfast product were also recalled, which is another example of the drugstore chain taking its customers seriously and taking preventative measures. Consumers are well advised to always pay attention to the information provided by manufacturers, especially for products that come into direct contact with the skin.
