Wrong-way driver from Basel in Germany: Police are looking for endangered witnesses!

A strange incident occurred last Saturday morning on a German highway near the Swiss border. A wrong-way driver with a Basel license plate endangered numerous road users when he was traveling from Rheinfelden D towards Lörrach. He had taken the Rheinfelden-Ost exit in the direction of Minseln before the situation came to a head country messenger reported. The red Honda turned around after about ten kilometers on the Dultenaugraben Bridge and finally completed its journey without an accident occurring.

The Weil am Rhein traffic police are looking for other road users who were endangered by the wrong-way driver and are asking for witness statements. The incident received a lot of attention, not least because driving the wrong way on motorways always causes great risk, although fortunately no accidents were reported in this case.

In another incident that also recently occurred near the A98 motorway, an elderly driver was observed traveling in the opposite direction. According to a report by News Today On Monday, May 26, 2025, several road users reported a wrong-way driver who was driving towards the Hochrhein motorway triangle. The suspected 88-year-old driver of a gray Ford Fiesta didn't just drive the wrong way and turned around after the Herrnbucktunnel and finally left the motorway at the Rheinfelden Ost junction.

The senior was found at home and his driver's license was seized after traffic police were called in. The illegal maneuver did not result in an accident, but the authorities urge caution, especially when it comes to such dangerous driving behavior.

Road safety

There is no denying that wrong-way driving is a serious problem in road traffic. Statistics show that more than 238,000 crimes related to traffic violations were recorded in 2024, including many offenses that endanger road safety. 76,725 alcohol violations alone were documented, and over 380,000 cases in which mobile devices were not used in accordance with road traffic regulations are alarming figures that call for vigilance. Information about these abnormalities was provided by KBA compiled and illustrate the need for education and prevention on the streets.

Given these circumstances, it is crucial that both young and older drivers are well informed and follow traffic laws. Our roads should be safe for everyone, and that includes being vigilant and, if in doubt, informing the authorities immediately if something is wrong.
