Lörrach delegation celebrates 20 years of friendship in Edirne!
From July 4th to 7th, a special trip by a delegation from Lörrach took place under the banner of international understanding. Mayor Jörg Lutz led ten committed citizens to Edirne to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the town twinning and to take part in the traditional 664th oil wrestling competitions. Lörrach.de reports on the lively experiences of the travel group, which consisted of a wide range of personalities: from the initiator of the city friendship, Prof. Manfred Raupp, to members of the AG Turkey from the city twinning association Lörrach International e. v.
The oil wrestling competitions, which have been recognized as an intangible UNESCO world cultural heritage since 2010, attract numerous spectators year after year. This year, barefoot fighters showed off their skills in traditional lederhosen. The final fight ended with Orhan Okulu winning, who took home the coveted gold belt. During the celebrations, the mayor emphasized the importance of such events for the exchange between cultures and emphasized the strengthening of partnerships through the encounters.
Diverse encounters and cultural impressions
On their trip, the people from Lörrach held numerous discussions with decision-makers from Turkey, including the rector of Trakya University, Mustafa Hatipler, who warmly welcomed the group. There have been close collaborations between this university and the DHBW Lörrach for 20 years, which provide important impetus for scientific exchange. Verlagshaus Jaumann emphasizes that Edirne and Lörrach not only maintain cultural ties, but also actively discuss possibilities for cooperation in the field of education.
The delegation also visited various cultural sites, including the impressive Selimiye Mosque, which is currently being renovated, and the Edirne City Museum. When they returned, Lutz enthusiastically reported on the culinary delights they were able to enjoy in Edirne, from fried liver to sweet specialties. These experiences are intended to further promote intercultural exchange, especially among young people.
Invitation to a return visit
The visit to Edirne was not without consequences: Lutz invited Mayor Filiz Gencan Akin to a return visit to Lörrach. This is characterized by intensive relationship management, which should encompass both economic and social cooperation. It turns out that city partnerships like the one between Lörrach and Edirne not only promote an ambition for cultural diversity, but also deepen understanding of one another. One World City emphasizes that such international contacts are essential for peaceful and respectful neighborhoods.
Overall, the visit by the Lörrach delegation is a successful measure to strengthen the friendly relations between the cities, which should also be further developed in the future. The delegation's return to Germany will certainly bring some fresh ideas and lived partnership to Lörrach.
