Mannheim shows solidarity: aid transport to the underprotected city of Chernivtsi

Amid the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Mannheim is determined to support its sister city Chernivtsi. On July 15, 2023, a truck with valuable relief supplies set off from Mannheim to assist the people in the war-torn city. How MRN News reports, Chernivtsi was recently directly targeted by a Russian attack for the first time. At least two people were killed and 14 injured, while several buildings in the city sustained damage.

Chernivtsi, with around 260,000 inhabitants and a large proportion of over 55,000 registered refugees, is crucial as a refuge for many people stranded from the rest of the country. In a special meeting on April 5, 2022, the Mannheim municipal council decided to set up aid for the twin cities in Ukraine, Poland and Moldova. Up to one million euros was made available for humanitarian aid to support the cities in need, in particular the badly affected sister city of Chernivtsi and the Moldovan city of Chişinău, which is facing various challenges, including over 35 refugee shelters.

Relief goods for those in need

The following goods were delivered during the last aid delivery from Mannheim:

  • Eine leistungsstarke Solaranlage (über 39 kWp) zur Unterstützung der Energieversorgung
  • 180 zweisprachige Kinderbücher für Grundschulkinder
  • Bettwäsche für die Poliklinik Nr. 2 in Czernowitz

This initiative is part of the project “Improving civil protection in municipal partnerships with Ukraine,” which is funded by federal funds. The Mannheim city space service organizes the transports and has been actively involved in aid transports since 2022. Mayor Christian Specht is concerned about the escalation of the war and the impact on the civilian population.

And it's not just Mannheim that way. The situation in Ukraine remains tense and the Foreign Office warns against traveling to the region. Travelers are advised to prepare well and follow the advice of local authorities. The recommendations include valid travel documents, cash supplies, sufficient provisions and taking necessary technical devices with you in order to be able to react to unexpected changes in the situation.

Solidarity and support

The solidarity between Mannheim and Chernivtsi goes back to a long-standing relationship that began in 2015. There has been an official solidarity partnership since 2022, which has been strengthened by numerous support measures. Because of this commitment, Mannheim was awarded the Goerdeler Prize in 2023. Mayor Dr. Peter Kurz emphasizes the importance of these partnerships for quick and effective help.

With our city's ongoing support and tireless commitment to Chernivtsi, Mannheim is a good example of solidarity in action in times of crisis. Together we stand by the people of Chernivtsi and other affected cities, not only to give hope, but also to create prospects for the future.

Further information about the ongoing relief measures and opportunities for support can be found on the websites of the Mannheim city administration and other aid organizations.
