This is how the sewer workers work in Mannheim: A look behind the scenes!
A lot has happened in the CEP industry (courier, express and parcel services) in recent years. After a downward trend between 2021 and 2022, where sales fell by around three percent to 26 billion euros, the year 2023 showed a positive turn: they rose by around two percent to 26.5 billion euros. This recovery is all the more remarkable given that sales growth through 2021 was primarily driven by the pandemic. Germany is one of the countries with the most packages per household per year. Statistics show that from 2010 to 2021, the number of shipments delivered increased to about 4.5 billion packages, while in 2023 it fell to 4.2 billion. But the forecasts are optimistic, with average growth of three percent until 2027. The record value of 2021 could soon be exceeded.
A large company in this industry, the DHL Group, has an impressive market share of around 49 percent of parcel volume and is one of the most valuable logistics companies globally. DHL was founded in 1995 with the privatization of the Deutsche Bundespost and has continued to develop since then. Its flexibility and wide range of services, such as registration as a DHL customer, enables access to free services such as parcel notifications and tailor-made desired delivery. Customers can conveniently send packages to a post office or a nearby DHL parcel shop and choose from over 15,500 packing stations.
The trends in parcel shipping
In 2023, the trend continued that most shipments in Germany were sent using regular parcel services, while express and courier shipments faded into the background. The average revenue per shipment rose in the CEP industry thanks to price increases by providers. Last year, over 570,000 people were employed in this industry, with around half of the employees being unskilled. The number of employees increased by 1,000 - a slight increase of 0.2 percent, while the total income of employees rose by 5.9 percent to 23.4 billion euros.
Another interesting development is the increasing willingness of consumers to pay more for environmentally friendly products. Around 24 percent of respondents chose this option in a recent study. Large companies are increasingly embracing decarbonization, with DHL having already converted around 29 percent of its vehicle fleet. In comparison, UPS only switched to alternative fuels or electric drives in around 14 percent of vehicles in 2023. Innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence are also used to optimize route planning in order to further reduce CO2 emissions.
In another area, urban drainage in Mannheim, there were also new developments in everyday work, as Mannheimer Morgen reports. It emphasizes the importance of registering to access additional information and services. As is the case in the CEP industry, where registration is required to use the free items.
In summary, it can be said that the CEP industry in Germany is on the right track despite the challenges that the last few years have brought with it. A spirit of innovation and a growing responsibility for the environment are two key factors that help the industry overcome its challenges and reach new heights.
