Climate protection or future risk: Booking demonstrates for children's rights!

Last weekend, impressive rallies for World Children's Day took place in numerous cities around the world, including Buchen. Organized by Fridays For Future Mosbach and the climate protection alliance of the Neckar-Odenwald district, the future of children and young people was the focus of these actions. Under the motto “Into the future with children’s rights,” a strong signal for climate protection was sent, combined with a call to protect children’s rights. My news reports that the event in Buchen was lightened up with, among other things, a work of art by artist Sofia Greff-Breuer. The bare winter tree was transformed by children into a colorful picture of life, a powerful symbol of hope and change.

The speeches during the rally caused a stir. Horst Berger sharply criticized the federal government and called for more support for climate protection, especially through additional charging stations in Buchen. “The climate crisis is already here and is hitting the weakest first,” warned Frank Hemberger, emphasizing the connection between climate protection and social justice. This shows that the pressing issues of climate change are inextricably linked to the rights of the younger generation. The global climate strike has clearly highlighted this connection and underlines that children and young people are particularly affected by the consequences of climate change the children's rights network reported.

A sign of connection

Jona Schmirch, just 18 years old, called for generation-fair policies and appealed to adults to protect the future of children. “Climate protection is also an opportunity, both ecologically and economically,” added Amelie Pfeiffer, citing concrete examples from agriculture and municipalities. Musical entertainment was also not neglected: singer Helen Kemmerer sang songs by Mine and Dota Kehr, which were moving for many in attendance.

The picture of the Grandmas for Future, who demonstrated together with the youngest children, was particularly touching, thereby sending a strong signal of solidarity in climate protection. In addition to the speeches, there were also numerous activities, such as making seed bombs and a game trailer from the Hand in Hand nursing service, which were intended to increase awareness of ecological action. Such events are important because the global climate crisis threatens not only the environment, but also the lives and future of all children UNICEF forcefully stated.

Children's rights under pressure

More and more organizations are drawing attention to the fact that the climate crisis is, at its core, a child rights crisis. Children have a right to a healthy environment, which is a fundamental part of their quality of life. But in many regions, children do not have enough access to clean water, often eat unhealthy diets and are hardly able to learn under the consequences of extreme weather events. The risks associated with climate change are significantly higher for them than for adults. Nearly half of all children worldwide are at high risk from the effects of climate change, underscoring the urgency of the messages from the demonstrations.

The events this weekend have clearly shown that something is happening. Climate protection and the protection of children's rights are inextricably linked. It is time for politics and society to take responsibility together and fight for a fairer and livable future.
