New roots for the Schutter: 90 trees planted during planting campaign!

In Friesenheim-Schuttern, a warm spot in the Ortenau district, a remarkable bank planting campaign took place today under the motto “New roots – for the Schutter and for our network”. Organized by the Freiburg Regional Council and the Baden-Württemberg Waterways Alliance, around 20 committed participants gathered, including citizens, representatives of environmental associations and local politicians. Among those present were Mayor Erik Weide and mayor Jürgen Silberer, who supported the ecological project.

The aim of this action, which was carried out as part of the multi-year UfeR-Vital project to revitalize the Schutter and Unditz water bodies, was to ecologically improve the water body. Around 90 young trees were planted along a 550 meter long section of the Schutter. Tree species included ash, black poplar, English oak, bird cherry, white poplar and willow, all of which perform important functions in the aquatic ecosystem.

The benefits of riparian trees

The project manager Verena Völz emphasized the immense importance of riparian trees for the health of rivers. Not only do they create vital habitats for fish, insects and amphibians, but they also provide shade, which is essential for reducing water temperatures and maintaining oxygen levels. These measures are important to prevent weeds from becoming infested with water and at the same time improve flood protection.

Woods along the water also act as natural stabilizing elements for the banks. Their roots help prevent erosion and secure banks. If these forms of vegetation are missing, the extensive introduction of neophytes can disrupt the ecological balance of the water and cause long-term damage. The trees created are not only an enrichment for nature, but also a step towards long-term environmental care and sustainability.

A strong network for the environment

The planting campaign is part of a comprehensive plan to promote cooperation between volunteers and experts to ecologically improve the waters in Baden-Württemberg. The support from the Schuttermündung Flood Protection Association and the Schuttern local administration shows how valuable a well-functioning network is for such projects. Many volunteers have come together today to make a contribution to improving nature and securing the future of the Schutter.

This is not only a win for the environment, but also for the community, which sends a strong signal for the preservation of its natural resources. Whether planting trees together or exchanging ideas about the importance of water bodies, it was clear that a strong awareness of environmental and nature conservation has developed in Schuttern. Everyone involved has shown a good knack for creating new roots for the Schutter.

Overall, it can be said that such initiatives are essential to promote biodiversity in our waters and to preserve the valuable habitats for local flora and fauna. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the participants, the Schutter will continue to be a beautiful retreat for many species for a long time to come.
