New district office for Ortenaukreis: District council decides on Burda area!

There are important decisions on the agenda in Ortenaukreis: The district council will discuss whether the existing district office should be renovated or a new building should be built. The trend, as schwarzwaelder-bote.de reports, is clearly towards new construction. A core renovation of the old building is no longer up for debate.

The Ortenaukreis has already taken the first steps to acquire the Burda area at the western entrance to the city. This would not only bring a breath of fresh air into the bureaucracy, but also contribute to the district office's planned location development. District Administrator Thorsten Erny already announced to the district council on December 2, 2024 that several properties would be considered for the new building.

Planned locations

In addition to the Burda printing plant site, the potential locations also include a property that belongs to the Grossmann Group and is located south of the new federal police station at the freight station. But there are hurdles here: A change ban in accordance with Section 19 of the General Railway Act (AEG) currently makes it difficult to make significant changes to the affected areas until actual use takes place.

A planned tunnel route will cross under the Grossmann property at a depth of around 15 meters. District Administrator Erny made it clear that a new building would be possible on this area, but with a smaller site size and different layouts. The area could be reduced by around 2,500 square meters, but this would not affect the existing change barrier.

Development planning continues

The designs for both locations - the Burda printing site and the Grossmann area - are to be presented to the district council on February 11, 2025, which will then decide on the next steps. A good hand will certainly be required here to select the best location and set the course for the future of the district office. The anticipation of a clear decision is palpable among both politicians and the population.

It also shows that citizen participation is not neglected in the region. The Helmstedt district recently completed a comprehensive district development concept, which saw a high level of participation from over 5,000 participants. As landkreis-helmstedt.de points out, a competition is being organized to thank the citizens for their participation. Details will be published from mid-August.

It remains to be seen which path will be chosen for the district office in Ortenaukreis, but one thing is clear: discussions and planning are in full swing.
