Theft statistics at a glance

The increase in thefts in Germany cannot be ignored. The latest statistics show an increase in theft crimes in 2022, for the first time since 2015, with around 1.78 million cases recorded by police. Shoplifting in particular is the most common theft, with 344,669 cases. At the same time, residential burglaries also experienced an increase, particularly in North Rhine-Westphalia, which recorded more than 23,500 cases. These developments make it clear that there is a need for action when it comes to crime - there is something to be done.

Despite the increasing numbers, the clearance rate for residential burglaries is comparatively low at only 16.1%, while it is significantly higher for robbery crimes at almost 60%. These circumstances highlight the challenges police face in ensuring the safety of citizens and tackling such crimes. Every tip from the public can be crucial.

Passersby and residents are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Only together can a safe environment be created. The police are appealing to the public to actively participate in prevention and share information to protect the community.

It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether the perpetrators will be caught. One thing is certain, however: Cologne citizens have a good hand when it comes to keeping an eye on their neighborhood.
