Occupational therapy practice is growing: New location in Villingen-Schwenningen!
In Cologne, two dedicated occupational therapists are bringing a breath of fresh air to hand therapy: Jutta Schmitz and Tobias Lieb. They founded their joint practice almost 20 years ago, which has now become one of the most sought-after contact points in the region. The focus of her work is not only on neurology, but especially on neurology Hand therapy. Tobias Lieb, who specializes in the production of thermoplastic hand splints, emphasizes that in the case of acute hand injuries, rapid treatment within three days after the operation is crucial.
The practice has earned a renowned reputation and is the only certified specialist practice at DAHTH ( Swabian newspaper ) in the Tuttlingen district. As the number of patients increases, a third location opens on September 1st on Dauchinger Straße in Villingen-Schwenningen. This expansion is the result of a cooperation with the Schwarzwald-Baar-Klinikum, particularly in the area of plastic and aesthetic hand surgery, which now enables those affected to receive treatment close to home.
Diverse therapy options
Hand diseases and injuries can have a major impact on everyday life, as the hands perform essential functions such as feeling, gripping and writing. Occupational therapy in hand therapy covers a wide range, from Splint treatments through physical measures to manual therapy. In the case of specific illnesses such as tendon and muscle injuries, bone fractures or rheumatic diseases, individual therapy is required, which is initiated by a differentiated occupational therapy assessment.
The psychological aspects of hand rehabilitation are particularly noteworthy. Injuries to the hands are not just physical, they also cause psychological challenges. The therapists' working methods therefore take into account not only the physical but also the emotional needs of the patients. This is supported by the use of various assessment tools such as the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), which specifically target quality of life and adaptive coping in everyday life ( Academia.edu ).
Acquisition and team growth
The practice team is growing to meet the new challenges and increasing patient volumes. An additional specialist has already been hired and further support is expected in October. In total, the team is expected to grow to twelve people in order to maintain the quality of treatment. Recruiting staff represents a major challenge, as many occupational therapists often prefer the children's area.
To attract qualified employees, the practice has increased wages and is offering additional incentives such as season tickets to the Wild Wings. Working hours have also been adjusted: Fridays now end at 2 p.m. to give employees more free time.
The combination of clear specialization, a strong team and close collaboration with specialists has contributed to Jutta Schmitz and Tobias Lieb's practice taking on an important role in hand therapy in Cologne. The therapists' innovative approaches and commitment ensure that patients not only receive the best possible treatment, but also comprehensive support on the way to restoring their hand functions.
