Homburg dominates Balingen: Ex-Bundesliga team on the road to victory!

On August 25, 2025, the Bizerba Arena in Balingen experienced an exciting football game in which FC Homburg triumphed and defeated the former Bundesliga club 4-1. In front of almost 800 spectators, the team delivered a convincing performance and was able to fight for a valuable place in the regional league table with this victory.

Both teams came into the game after an intense week. FC Homburg, fresh from a DFB Cup shock against Holstein Kiel (0-2) and an impressive 6-0 win against Bahlinger SC, was well prepared. Coach Roland Seitz praised the defensive stability of his charges and the successful preparation for the Swabian game. “We were able to specifically address Balingen’s strengths,” says Seitz.

The course of the game

The first goal of the afternoon came in the 32nd minute from a free kick from Markus Mendler. This goal, which was saved unluckily by keeper Dennis Klose, gave the Saarland team an early lead. The Balingen defense revealed weaknesses, especially with set pieces, where player Murat Isik pointed out the problems: “To concede three goals from set pieces is simply too much.”

After the half-time break, Homburg immediately followed up. A brace from Suljic in the 53rd minute hurt the Balingen team, but they missed a chance to get back into the game with a missed penalty from Amnay Moutassime in the 81st minute. The 1:4 came in the 83rd minute when Frederik Schumann used another Homburg standard undefended. The defeat was bitter for the Balingers, as they are now at the bottom of the table after their third defeat in their fourth game.

Table situation

After the defeat, Balingen only has 3 points and is in last place in the regional league together with SG Barockstadt, Bahlingen, Sandhausen and Mainz. With 4:14 goals, it could be a big challenge for Balinger in the coming period. In the table, SGV Freiberg is at the top after a 4-1 win in Trier, followed by TSV Steinbach Haiger with 12 points.

FC Homburg, on the other hand, after two wins in a row, has worked its way up to fourth place and is now behind FSV Frankfurt, who is in third place with 9 points. The boost for Homburg is noticeable, especially as they were the only fourth division team to reach the round of 16 of the DFB Cup after knocking Greuther Fürth out of the competition, which fueled enthusiasm in the region. Marcel Gaus, a key player at 1. FC Saarbrücken, described the win against Bayern Munich as historic and emphasized how few teams can celebrate such successes.

Football in Saarland, especially the performances of 1. FC Saarbrücken and FC Homburg, are a ray of hope. 1. FC Saarbrücken, which was promoted to the third division three years ago and recently reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup, is showing impressive development. The club can look back on a proud history, even though in its best days it only played in the Bundesliga for five years.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the season will develop for Balingen's team and whether they can quickly get out of the bottom of the table while the other teams continue to cause a sensation.
