Traffic chaos in Aalen: Pedelec theft and serious accidents are shocking!

On Friday night in Aalen, a black Pedelec from the manufacturer Radon, model Jealous Hybrid 8.0, was stolen from an open garage on Ziegelstrasse. The police are asking for information: Anyone who knows anything about the whereabouts of the bike or the thief can contact the Aalen police station on 07361/5800.

The incident sheds light on the increasing importance of Pedelecs in recent years. According to the Federal Statistical Office, e-bikes are now one of the most popular means of transport, which unfortunately also influences the number of accidents. In 2023, almost 24,000 Pedelec users had accidents, which represents a dramatic increase compared to 2014. While only 2,223 Pedelec riders were involved in accidents in 2014, there are now almost eleven times as many, with a shocking increase in the number of people killed from 39 to 188 in the same period.

Risk of accidents in road traffic

In parallel to the higher Pedelec numbers, the general accident statistics in road traffic also show worrying results. Most recently, 441 cyclists died in 2024, including 192 e-bike riders. This makes it clear that Pedelecs are particularly at risk, especially for the older generation. The proportion of seniors who have accidents with e-bikes is 68.8 percent!

Another example from the region: A traffic accident occurred in Schwäbisch Gmünd on Friday morning in which a 68-year-old driver of a Ford Kuga changed lanes without paying any attention to a Ford Fiesta driving next to him. Fortunately, both drivers were uninjured, but the damage amounts to 18,000 euros.

The cyclists under pressure

The figures show that young drivers under the age of 45 now account for a larger proportion of Pedelec accidents. The proportion rose from 10.7% in 2014 to 31.2% in 2023. A worrying trend, especially since one in six accident victims on non-motorized bicycles in 2023 was already 65 years old or older. These developments make it clear how important safety and education are when dealing with Pedelecs.

The increase in Pedelecs and the associated risks pose particular challenges for road safety. It is therefore crucial for the riders concerned to find out about safe riding practices and the correct handling of these modern bicycles.

Transport policy is required to increase safety for all road users. Whether by creating safer cycle paths or through campaigns to raise awareness, a good hand is required here!
