Gas under the river: Waiblingen relies on innovative pipelines!
An ambitious project is currently being worked on in Waiblingen that will make the gas supply in the region future-proof. An essential part of this work is the laying of a large gas pipeline under the Rems, for which a huge culvert is used. This 50 meter long and 70 tonne component makes it possible to cross the river without damming it, which represents an enormous technical challenge. Loud Stuttgart News The pipeline will be part of the South German Natural Gas Pipeline (SEL), which extends over a total length of 250 kilometers and is scheduled to be completed by 2032.
The pipeline will be constructed in five sections at once, with some already operational. The special feature of the new line: It is not only suitable for natural gas, but also for hydrogen because a special steel is used. But the work was not without complications. In July 2025 there was a tragic accident on the construction site in which a 26-year-old construction worker lost his life. This greatly overshadowed the construction work and led to conditions in terms of occupational safety that needed improvement, as shown ZVW is reported.
Status of construction work
Following the accident, measures were taken to improve safety at the construction site. However, there are delays in construction progress due to the availability of specialist companies and the disruption caused by the Christmas circus in Waiblingen. However, the work in the complicated section that runs between Waiblingen, Beinstein and Hohenacker will be given priority. The culvert is expected to be laid in mid-January or early February 2026, which poses a challenge in view of the planned commissioning in mid-2026.
Residents are concerned about the project, and property owners in particular often express criticism of the lack of information and the possible impact on their properties. These concerns are not unfounded, as many safety aspects must be taken into account when carrying out earthworks and pipeline construction work in such environments. How on BGETEM is uncovered, this also includes the correct securing of pipe stacks against rolling apart and special precautions when freedom of movement is limited in order to minimize the risk.
The plans are ambitious and there are always challenges with such large projects, but those responsible are optimistic that the project is progressing according to plan and that the region will soon be able to benefit from a modern and secure gas supply. Let’s stay excited to see what the coming months will bring!
