Major fire in Greater Saxony: 81-year-old and 50-year-old rescued in crisis operation!
On the night of June 21, 2025, something happened in Hirschberg a. d. Bergstrasse-Großsachsen to a dramatic house fire that kept residents and emergency services alike on tenterhooks. According to [Heidelberg24](https://www.heidelberg24.de/region/brand-feuer-wohnhaus-rhein-neckar-kreis-hirschberg-grosssachsen-sach Schaden-verleute-93796135.html), an emergency call at 9:40 p.m. reported significant smoke development in a residential building on Lessingstrasse. The fire department was quickly on the scene and discovered that the fire had broken out on the first floor of an apartment building.
There were two people inside the building, an 81-year-old and a 50-year-old. Both noticed the fire in time and tried desperately to put it out themselves, but had to quickly flee. While the 81-year-old was uninjured, the 50-year-old was taken to a clinic as a precaution with suspected mild smoke poisoning. Fortunately, the fire brigade, which arrived with a turntable ladder and several teams wearing breathing apparatus, was able to prevent the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings.
Extensive rescue measures
Despite the rapid response of the emergency services, one person in the fire apartment arrived too late to help. She was later found by firefighters, but could not be saved, as Feuerwehr.de reports. Numerous firefighters, district fire chief Patrick Janowski, the emergency services and the police were present at the scene. Mayor Ralf Gänshirt found out directly about the situation on site.
The adjacent elementary school served as a short-term gathering point for residents and those affected. The estimated property damage is around 80,000 euros, while the cause of the fire remains unclear at this time. The investigation into this was taken over by the Weinheim criminal police, who secured the first leads and closed Friedrich-Ebert-Straße during the operation before it was later reopened.
Fire protection focal point
If the emergency services first looked for the cause of the fire, it is important to also take a look at the general causes of the fire. According to the current statistics from the [IFS](https://www.ifs-ev.org/ Schadenverhuetung/ursachenaktien/ursachenstatistics-brandschaeden-2024/) show that many fires are caused by technical defects or improper handling of fire. This is particularly dangerous in residential buildings, where quick action can often mean the difference between life and death.
These events once again illustrate how important it is to take fire safety measures seriously and to be aware of the dangers. The community is called upon to be vigilant and to alert the fire department immediately in the event of a fire. Everyone can do their part to avoid fire-risk situations and minimize potential damage.
