Heidelberg launches new NIT profile: Future-oriented education 2025!
From the coming school year 2025/26, the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium (KFG) in Heidelberg will have a new profile subject: natural science, computer science and technology (NIT). This was decided on July 3, 2025 by the Committee for Culture and Education. The measure is part of a comprehensive education reform in Baden-Württemberg that aims to make schools fit for the future and take into account the needs of a digital society. How MRN News reported, the existing profile subject Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics (IMP) will be replaced nationwide by the NIT profile.
Without this change, the KFG would only be able to offer language profiles such as ancient Greek and French from the 2027/28 school year. The NIT profile combines scientific principles (biology, chemistry, physics) with practical computer science and technology. This innovative orientation is important in order to provide students with skills that are highly valued in today's technologically dominated world.
New educational paths in Baden-Württemberg
The educational reform, which is expanded to include the NIT profile, also aims to do justice to all students. Loud Baden-Württemberg.de Education Minister Theresa Schopper announced that the reform should particularly support children with less good starting conditions. At least one in five children in primary school does not achieve the minimum standards in reading, writing and arithmetic.
In addition, from the 2024/2025 school year, programs such as “SprachFit” will be introduced, which offer intensive language training for children with special needs before they start school. The state is thus going one step further in preparing students for their educational path, also through the introduction of junior classes, which will be created in primary schools from the 2026/2027 school year.
Digital education and future skills
The Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium already has experience in scientific and technical teaching and can rely on existing laboratories and a solid digital infrastructure. The NIT profile is closely linked to the compulsory subject “Computer Science and Media Education”, which is taught from grades 5 to 11. In this way, students can acquire digital skills at an early stage.
But that's not all: the introduction of the NIT profile aims to promote future skills such as critical reflection on technology and problem-solving thinking. In an environment like Heidelberg, which is characterized by high-tech start-ups, research institutions and digital health projects, these skills are of great importance. As stated in the new guidelines, compulsory elective subjects will in future begin uniformly in grade 6, with students being able to choose a corresponding subject as early as grade 5.
Overall, it shows that the KFG and Baden-Württemberg's educational reform have a good knack for preparing students for the requirements of a dynamic future. The students can therefore look forward to a modern and practical education that meets the requirements of the 21st century.
