All Souls' Day concert in Tennenbronn: guilt, forgiveness and delight!

On Sunday, November 2nd, a very special concert took place in the enchanting St. Johann Baptist Church in Tennenbronn, which was all about “Guilt and Forgiveness”. Under the direction of Christa and Wilm Geismann, the vocal ensemble Capella Cantorum celebrated its 50th anniversary with a well-thought-out program that focused on the themes of life, death and transcendent questions.

The evening began with a cappella motets by English composers that captivated the audience. Highlights were the works “Never weatherbeaten saile” by Thomas Campion and “Nolo mortem peccatoris” by Thomas Morley, which was staged as a dialogue between Jesus and God. The first part concluded with three motets by Richard Farrant, which introduced the concert close to the audience.

A deeply moving program

In the second part of the concert, works for concert and organ from the 19th century were presented. Among other things, the impressive piece “Lord, our Father, God's Son” by Gustav Holst was played, which was translated into German by Christa Geismann. “Jerusalem” by Charles Hubert Parry, based on texts by William Blake, was also an integral part of the program. This section was rounded off by the solo piece “Fountain Reverie for organ” by Percy Eastman Fletcher, which got the audience in the mood for the coming highlights.

The highlight of the evening was clearly Colin Mawby's “Requiem”, a contemporary funeral mass that impressively showcased both the quiet and lively passages. The soprano Christiane Barthel and the organist Hee-Jung Min made a decisive contribution to the atmosphere of the concert with their virtuoso playing and their impressive voices.

well received by the audience

The audience rewarded the performances with thunderous applause and standing ovations, which impressively confirmed the high quality of the performances. Josef Broghammer, who moderated the evening, took the opportunity to thank the musicians and the management for their extraordinary performance. After the concert, visitors were warmly invited to come together in the parish hall over drinks and pastries and exchange ideas.

Capella Cantorum, founded in 1975 at Konstanz Minster, gave numerous concerts until its 50th anniversary and was even active internationally until 2000. As Capella Cantorum Freiburg, they continue to delight their listeners with a variety of programs in the region and beyond, so that the concert evening not only offered an appreciation of the past, but also a look ahead to future musical experiences.

For everyone who missed the outstanding concert, it was already an invitation to the next matinee with the thematic focus “Very British”. The creative minds behind the music, Christa and Wilm Geismann, have been Tennenbronners by choice since 1999 and their commitment contributes to the cultural diversity of the region.
