Potato salad is getting cheaper: This is how Germany celebrates Christmas 2025!

Christmas Eve is just around the corner and for many families in Germany, potato salad with sausages is simply a must. But how much does this traditional dish cost this year? An investigation of the Institute for German Economy (IW) shows good news: In 2025, prices for potato salad will be cheaper in most regions than in previous years. A look back at the prices reveals that preparation with vinegar and oil is particularly popular and has now become even cheaper.

On average, potato salad with mayonnaise will only cost 7.10 euros in 2025, while it was 7.29 euros in 2024. This corresponds to a decrease of around 3 percent. For the vinegar-oil variant, the price in 2025 will even be 5.93 euros, which represents a decrease of around 5 percent compared to the previous year. Loud Focus According to 34 percent of those surveyed in a Statista survey, potato salad is served on Christmas Eve, followed by roast goose or duck (20 percent).

Regional differences and price increases

While prices have fallen in many regions, there are places where the popular dish has become more expensive. In the Wesermarsch district, for example, potato salad with mayonnaise costs 8.05 euros - that's 13.4 percent above average. Here the inflationary price situation is primarily due to the higher costs, which are triggered by several factors, including the Ukraine war.

A look at Schwäbisch Hall shows that the mayonnaise version here now costs 7.88 euros, which corresponds to an increase of 11 percent. In Berlin, however, bargain hunters can breathe a sigh of relief: there, potato salad with mayonnaise is available for 6.95 euros, about 2 percent cheaper than average.

Price development for the combination with sausages

However, prices for the classic Christmas meal are not rising everywhere. In 2024, the cost of potato salad with sausages was 7.29 euros - an increase of 4.6 percent compared to the previous year. This price development is above the average inflation for food, which was found to be 3.2 percent. T online also reports a minimal increase in prices for the southern German version with vinegar and oil of just 0.4 percent.

Originally, the ingredients for our beloved Christmas dish were not as expensive as in previous years. The big price increases in recent years appear to be normalizing, and that is welcome news for consumers, especially in the run-up to Christmas when spending is often higher.

Overall, it is clear that potato salad remains a popular and inexpensive dish on Christmas Eve, and the current price developments are bringing a little relief to household budgets. Every year there are regional differences that show that it is definitely worth comparing prices. Jams and cookies are on the list, but the potato salad remains a delight – and maybe even a bargain this year!
