Kunsthalle Würth: Big anniversary with spectacular expansion!

Something is happening in Schwäbisch Hall! The Kunsthalle Würth, a museum known far beyond the region, is about to undergo a major innovation: the shell of the extension has been completed and is bringing a breath of fresh air into the art landscape. The opening of the extension building will be celebrated in autumn 2026 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the art gallery. Reason enough to prepare for an exciting year!

Since its inauguration on May 18, 2001, by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, the art gallery has aroused a lot of interest. Over five million visitors have been able to marvel at more than 51 different exhibitions in recent years. The charming location, which sits on the site of a former lion brewery, combines modern architecture with the charm of medieval city architecture. The high-quality three-story glass front and the walls made of local shell limestone make the building a real eye-catcher.

Planned expansions and opening exhibition

The expansion will create an additional 600 square meters of exhibition space, bringing the total area to an impressive 3,200 square meters. With new workshop rooms, office space and an inviting welcome area that includes a museum shop and a modernized café, the Kunsthalle becomes even more attractive for art lovers and the curious. The interior work is already in full swing and includes important work such as electrical installations and glazing.

Highlights of the upcoming opening exhibition include celebrated German artist Anselm Kiefer. This retrospective will not only show works from Kiefer's impressive collection of over 60 works in the Würth Collection, but will also include works on loan from his studio. Residents of Ulm and Neu-Ulm stop by regularly and will certainly be amazed by the artistic treasures.

Current exhibition and further plans

The anticipation of the opening in 2026 is reinforced by the current exhibition “The third dimension in images. Holograms and optical illusions in the Würth Collection”. This can be visited until February 8, 2026 with free admission. The art gallery will then remain closed until it reopens in autumn 2026.

There is a lot to do before the extension opens its doors. It will be exciting to see how the final work progresses and the Kunsthalle prepares for its next big stage. The willing support of the local art scene and the enthusiasm of the visitors already give an idea of the great potential of the coming months. A look at what the Kunsthalle is building – there’s definitely something going on!
