Low-level flights by the Bundeswehr: Residents in Ellwangen protest against noise!

Low-level flights with Bundeswehr fighter jets can now be carried out again in the Ellwangen, Crailsheim and Nördlingen region. The newly reactivated “Low Flying Area 7” allows flights up to a height of 80 meters, which represents a significant change to the previously existing regulations, which only allowed low flights up to 300 meters. This decision, which was made against the background of the changed security policy situation in Europe after the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, met with different reactions from the population.

Peace activist Volker Nick from Mutlangen is critical of the announced exercises. He remembers similar noise pollution 40 years ago and is concerned that the noise could significantly disrupt the work of the clinic in Ellwangen. For Nick, low-level flights not only represent unnecessary noise, but also a form of environmental destruction that he does not want to accept.

Reactions from politics and aviation

Meanwhile, Bundestag member Roderich Kiesewetter from the CDU sees the new exercises as essential for the country's security. “Such flights were originally common practice in the USA and are now also important here,” explains Kiesewetter. Former Bundeswehr pilot Peter Stütz adds that low-level flights play an important role in the training of soldiers in order to optimally prepare them for possible missions. His recognition of the need for such measures goes hand in hand with the recognition that the flights can pose a burden on local residents.

The permitted low-level flights are legally limited to a maximum of two minutes at a height of 80 meters, which residents should carefully keep in mind. The Bundeswehr plans to only carry out the maneuvers in specially designated areas and to provide regular information about upcoming exercises. However, there are concerns: Many residents have heard about these changes in the media and do not feel that the Bundeswehr has been sufficiently involved in the decision.

Noise pollution and information policy

The increased noise level caused by low-altitude flights is an issue that has appealed to many people. Expert Stütz explains that this form of exercise not only serves to train pilots, but also makes it easier to shoot down drones. The noise, especially at a depth of 80 meters, is a noticeable challenge for both people and the environment - the noise level at this height is significantly higher than at the previous 300 meters.

Where the journey for aviation in Germany ultimately leads remains exciting. It remains to be seen whether citizens can be reassured about the planned maneuvers. What is certain, however, is that in an increasingly uncertain world, the Bundeswehr must adequately prepare its trainers and soldiers and, in doing so, should not completely lose sight of the concerns of local residents.
