Beaver family causes chaos: cycle path near Schura under water!
On August 14, 2025, a family of beavers settled in the Schönbachtal between Schura and Durchhausen, providing exciting but also dangerous challenges. The clever rodents have nibbled on numerous trees and willows and have chosen an underpass on the bypass near Schura as their new habitat. The activities of the beavers have led to the Danube-Neckar cycle path being flooded. The cycle path was barely passable last week, but the water level has fallen again thanks to the warm temperatures. However, the tunnel remains dangerous as a film of mud and sediment has made it slippery, causing cyclists to despair.
Traffic signs encourage cyclists to dismount before and after the tunnel and to pass the underpass on foot. But as is often the case, only a few people follow this instruction. The mayor Wolfgang Schoch urgently warns against accidents caused by slipping, even on dry roads. The safety aspect is very important to him and he appeals to drivers to obey traffic signs. Technically removing the dam that the beavers have created could be a solution, but it would deprive them of their livelihood. The pressure on nature is increasing, and the discussion about it will probably continue for a long time.
The number of cyclists
The Danube-Neckar cycle path is very popular and is frequented by around 300 to 400 cyclists per day on warm weekends, as traffic counts from recent years show. But this joy of cycling could soon be history, because thunderstorms are forecast again for the coming weekend. This could lead to renewed flooding of the tunnel and worsen the already precarious situation.
The case shows how humans and nature are in constant tension. On the one hand the desire for undisturbed leisure time, on the other hand the needs of the animal world. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether a solution can be found that is fair to both cyclists and beavers. At the moment, all cyclists should be aware that it's not just about fun, but also about safety.
Even if the beavers cause some inconvenience, it is still a fascinating sight to see these animals in their natural environment. The balance between humans and nature is an ever-changing game in which each individual should do their part to treat each other with respect.
