Everyday heroic deeds: 107 blood donors honored in Villingen-Schwenningen!
In Villingen-Schwenningen, 107 citizens who volunteered as blood donors were recently warmly honored. The celebratory event took place under the patronage of Mayor Jürgen Roth, who was represented by Friedrich Bettecken. On this occasion, Bettecken emphasized the immense importance that the voluntary commitment of blood donors has in saving human lives.
Particular attention was paid to two men, Rolf Bossert and Roland Breithaupt, who donated a whopping 150 times in their years as blood donors. Her tireless commitment to the well-being of others was recognized with great applause. Around 40 of the honorees accepted their awards in person, while the entire event was accompanied by the German Red Cross's (DRK) call for blood donations, which is widely supported in the city.
The need for blood donations
Blood donations are commonplace in Germany and are urgently needed every day. However, only around 3% of the population donates blood, which makes it clear that there is a need for action. The importance of these donations is evident not only in operations, but also in the treatment of cancer patients and in emergency situations. The #missingtype campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of blood donations. The letters of blood groups A, B, AB and 0 are omitted to make it clear that each donation is irreplaceable. Supporters like Sami Khedira and Lena Oberdorf have joined this campaign to mobilize blood donations. Khedira points out that a single donation can save up to three lives.
