SPD MP Türk-Nachbaur experiences everyday care in the Bad Dürrheim spa monastery

What happens when a politician steps into the shoes of a nurse? Derya Türk-Nachbaur, SPD MP, asked herself this question when she worked for a day at the KWA Kurstift Bad Dürrheim. Her aim was to experience first-hand the challenges and developments in care. In a personal conversation with the state representative of the Federal Association of Private Providers of Social Services, Dominic David Steinbrenner, current problems that nursing staff have to face on a daily basis were addressed. The great work being done here can hardly be overestimated.

The Kurstift currently cares for 150 residents, who are supported by an outpatient service and personal assistance. An important topic that came up in the discussion was primary care in rural areas, which is often problematic. Many new residents have difficulty finding a primary care doctor, further exacerbating the situation. It turns out that the challenges in care not only affect the nursing staff, but also the basic care of seniors.

Care shortage and digital solutions

An alarming look into the future reveals that there will be a shortage of at least 280,000 nursing staff in Germany by 2049, as destatis.de reports. The statistical surveys on all those in need of care who were in need of care on December 31st. who have received nursing care benefits come to the conclusion that a comprehensive database is necessary to identify developments in nursing care and demand. This data is crucial for the planning and further development of SGB XI.

Türk-Nachbaur and nursing specialist Svetlana Todorovic also talk about the importance of documentation in nursing. According to a study by Fraunhofer IML, nursing staff spend an average of 109 minutes per shift on documentation work. Digital documentation systems could provide relief here. AI-powered voice documentation in particular has the potential to save up to 39 minutes per shift, which would allow nurses to better manage their tasks.

The situation in the Kurstift

In the Kurstift Bad Dürrheim, where Türk-Nachbaur visited, the fully inpatient care places are fully occupied and the short-term care places are also few and far between. The opportunity for residents to shop independently, attend doctor's appointments and take part in excursions contributes to a high standard of living and shows the responsible approach to the needs of seniors. These aspects are an essential motivation for the nursing staff, despite the challenges they have to overcome every day.

The insights that Türk-Nachbaur was able to gain during her working day illustrate how important it is to strengthen the nursing profession and implement more modern methods. The commitment of both nursing staff and politicians is essential to ensure the quality of care in the coming years. It is up to all of us to give care a future that meets the needs of both people in need of care and carers.
