Edeka opens new e-center in Sigmaringen: What happens to Kaufland?

What's happening in Sigmaringen? The closure of Kaufland on June 14th caused a lot of excitement. Instead of a new food provider, an Edeka e-center will soon be built here, which is expected to open at the end of 2026. This will be the third Edeka branch in the city. Mayor Marcus Ehm is concerned about the loss of supermarket diversity in Sigmaringen, as the city had no influence on who took over the former Kaufland location on Georg-Zimmerer-Straße.

According to information from Schwäbische.de Kaufland was unable to use any of the land offered by the city, which led to this decision. Edeka took action due to building law issues and informed the city about its new supermarket concept. The original plan was to open a Marktkauf branch, but Edeka was unable to find a store manager for it. Fortunately, the search for a store manager for the E-Center was successful.

The future of the former Kaufland location

While the Edeka E-Center will soon be moving in, the former Kaufland site remains empty for the time being, apart from the Herz-Apotheke, which will remain open. There are also ongoing discussions about opening an Apollo optician, which could possibly be launched together with the new E-Center.

The EDEKA Group, which also includes the Netto Marken-Discount discount chain, plays an important role in the German food trade. It not only relies on its variety of brands, but also promotes regional producers and offers independent merchants support in areas such as logistics and marketing. The EDEKA association, in which more than 3,200 merchants are organized, is based on a cooperative structure that makes it possible to make strategic decisions efficiently. Further information about the structure and offerings of the EDEKA network can be found on the website EDEKA to read.

The market situation in Germany is also interesting. How Buy it reports, there are a total of five large supermarket groups, which, in addition to EDEKA, also include REWE, the Schwarz Group (Lidl and Kaufland), Metro and the Aldi Group. These groups provide significant impetus to the food trade through takeovers and expanding strategies.

While the residents of Sigmaringen are eagerly awaiting developments around the E-Center, it remains to be hoped that the new offering will maintain the variety of supermarkets in the region and meet the needs of the population.
