Sigmaringen: Hospital with optimistic forecasts after a year of crisis!

There have been some drastic developments at Sigmaringen Hospital recently that give hope for a positive turnaround. After a fairly mixed year in 2023, in which the hospital recorded a deficit of 16.7 million euros, the latest figures show a decreasing loss ratio. A loss of 7.6 million euros is forecast for 2024, which has already been absorbed by SRH Gesundheit GmbH and the Sigmaringen district. These figures are a ray of hope after the dramatic decline in finances in the previous year, which was partly due to a restructuring program. Around 125 employees, which corresponds to around a tenth of the workforce, had to accept their dismissal. That's what she reports Swabian newspaper.

What is particularly noteworthy is that the largest savings in recent months have been in human resources. However, there were no redundancies for operational reasons; instead, a volunteer program was developed in collaboration with the works council. This program is expected to affect around 60 employees, although nursing positions will not be affected. Instead, employees with nursing qualifications are given the opportunity to further train or implement nursing skills. The managing directors of SRH Kliniken Landkreis Sigmaringen GmbH, Dr. Jan-Ove Faust has been working intensively over the last few months on a restructuring plan that is only expected to have positive effects from 2025. More about this can be found on KMA Online.

What's next?

The investment backlog at the hospital remains an important issue. Those responsible have been waiting for a funding decision for 25 million euros for almost a year. Clinic boss Sven Schönfeld is therefore calling for more clarity from politicians and appealing to those responsible to live up to their responsibilities. A decrease in losses and an increase in patient numbers are expected for 2025 alone. These new developments could be decisive in ensuring that the situation at the hospital finally improves.

But not everything is as simple as it seems. With the introduction of the retention fee from 2026, which is intended to provide financial security for hospitals, there are still uncertainties. Exactly how high the compensation will be is currently uncertain. The Federal Ministry of Health has already pointed out that hospitals included in the state hospital plan receive reimbursement of treatment costs from health insurance companies. This system could make a significant contribution to stabilizing the hospitals' financial situation in the long term; You can find out more about this on the website Federal Ministry of Health.

The Sigmaringen Hospital is at a turning point. The coming months will show whether we can successfully continue on the chosen path. With a good hand and the right support, the hospital could perhaps become a stable healthcare provider again.
