Fatal accident on B313: Driver dies after head-on collision

Yesterday, June 18, 2025, a tragic accident occurred on federal highway 313 between Sigmaringen and Meßkirch, in which a 33-year-old driver lost her life. The woman died at the scene of the accident after a 30-year-old man crossed into the oncoming lane in a right-hand bend and collided head-on with her vehicle. Two men who were involved in the accident suffered serious injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby clinic, as reported by allgaeuer-zeitung.de.

After the head-on collision, the driver's car crashed into a van driven by a 26-year-old man who was driving behind the driver. The federal highway had to be closed for several hours due to the rescue work, which led to significant traffic delays. The property damage is estimated at around 30,000 euros and the police have started investigating the exact cause of the accident. The 30-year-old's driver's license was confiscated on the orders of the public prosecutor.

A look at traffic accidents in Germany

Unfortunately, accidents like the one described above are not uncommon. In 2023, Germany recorded around 2.5 million road traffic accidents. However, while the number of accidents is increasing, the number of road deaths has fallen sharply: from 19,193 in 1970 to 2,839 in 2023. This shows that although road safety has improved in recent decades, there is still much to be done. The EU transport ministers have set themselves the goal of no more traffic deaths by 2050, according to statista.com.

The most common causes of traffic accidents with personal injuries are insufficient distance, inadequate speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2023, there were around 15,700 alcohol-related personal injury accidents, in which 193 people died. Traffic on motorways and federal highways presents a significantly higher risk than on roads with less traffic, according to destatis.de.

In addition, we have also experienced an increase in accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters in recent years. In 2023, around 23,744 people were injured or killed while riding e-bikes. This is an increase from last year, adding to the conversation about road safety.

It remains to be hoped that measures to improve road safety will continue to be pushed forward in order to avoid tragic accidents like the one that happened yesterday.
