New temporary bridge in Bad Cannstatt: connection to the district is established!
During the night from Sunday to Monday, a significant logistical challenge was successfully overcome in Bad Cannstatt. An impressive 70 meter long and 125 tonne steel bridge was delivered to the banks of the Neckar by barge. The bridge is intended to serve as a temporary bridge and will connect the core of Bad Cannstatt with the popular Wilhelma and Pragstrasse from mid-November. This will make it a temporary replacement for the Rosenstein Bridge, which was demolished in July 2024 SWR reported.
A smooth lifting of the bridge marked the highlight of the project. The bridge was rotated using a crawler crane and placed on prepared abutments. Pedestrians and cyclists can be happy: the route width of around 4.20 meters offers them unrestricted access via plastic panels. However, alternative crossings such as the König Karls Bridge and the Reinhold Maier Bridge are necessary for motorized traffic. Stuttgart is in the process of expanding the necessary infrastructure and will build a new Rosenstein Bridge by 2031.
Investments in infrastructure
In addition to the short-term goal of restoring the road connection in Bad Cannstatt as quickly as possible, the city of Stuttgart is pursuing a more comprehensive strategy. A proud budget of around one billion euros is being invested in the renewal and maintenance of many old bridges. This is part of a larger nationwide bridge modernization program. The BMV highlights that Germany has around 40,300 bridges, many of which were built between 1960 and 1985. In order to meet the growing demands of heavy traffic and the aging of these structures, comprehensive maintenance and modernization measures are essential.
The bridge modernization network, which also focuses on the main roads, will bring many older bridges into shape in the coming years. These measures will not only improve the load-bearing capacity but also the traffic safety of the bridge structures.
Logistics and challenges
The delivery of the temporary bridge is based on well-thought-out planning, which is aimed at minimally invasive implementation in order to hinder shipping on the Neckar as little as possible. The transport was organized and carried out two days before excavation using two cranes. This logistical precision is a sign of good management on the part of the city administration, which continues to invest in infrastructure.
From now on, citizens are invited to use the new temporary bridge while the city of Stuttgart focuses on building a permanent solution. But the challenges often come with you - a medical emergency occurred on an inland waterway ship on Sunday evening, in which the Stuttgart fire department used a crane to rescue a seriously injured person. Such incidents demonstrate how important a well-functioning infrastructure is for people's safety and mobility.
In conclusion, the measures in Bad Cannstatt are only part of a large-scale plan to make bridges in Germany future-proof and meet the requirements of a growing society. Solutions that not only offer practical advantages, but also promote coexistence in the city.
