Blaustein: Construction site visit for flood protection on November 14th!

In Blaustein, we are currently working hard on comprehensive flood protection. Construction work has been underway since November 2024 and extends over an impressive length of around 2.7 kilometers. This necessary measure is intended to protect the city from flooding in the future, which has become increasingly dangerous in the region due to various factors. The Tübingen regional council has assigned the implementation of this initiative to the company Blautal GmbH, which is receiving support from the subcontractor Münch. Some sections of the construction work have already been successfully completed, while others are still being planned or executed. The city authorities make it clear that flood protection is not only approached technically, but also strategically in order to cope with increasing danger due to climatic changes.

There is an exciting opportunity for all citizens to gain insights into the progress of the construction work! A construction site inspection will take place on Friday, November 14, 2025, starting at 1:30 p.m. at the festival site at the Lixparkstadion on Ehrensteinerstrasse. On this day, those interested have the opportunity to ask questions of experts on site and find out about the measures. However, if you would like to take part, you should not forget to bring sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing, as the event takes place outdoors.

Flood protection – an important topic

What exactly is flood protection and why is it becoming more and more relevant? Simply put, these are measures to reduce the risks of flooding. In Germany, for example, areas that statistically can be flooded once in 100 years must be designated as flood areas. Flood protection is not a new issue; in fact, the 1953 flood disaster in the Netherlands highlighted the need to introduce strict protective measures. The requirements for flood protection vary greatly depending on the region and risk assessment. While typical protection levels can be found in Germany, there are also international standards, for example in Switzerland, where around 1.8 million people live in areas at risk of flooding.

It is interesting to see how such projects are approached in other countries. In Sri Lanka, for example, the demand for environmentally friendly building materials is growing, which also affects the construction of flood protection systems. Wood-plastic composite materials are becoming increasingly important there. Not only are these materials durable and resistant to moisture, but they are also aesthetically pleasing and offer a sustainable alternative to traditional wood. They are used not only in construction projects, but also increasingly in furniture production and garden landscapes.

This combination of local commitment in Blaustein and international trends shows that flood protection is a preventative strategy that we should all take seriously. The challenges posed by climate change not only influence our urban development, but also the materials and techniques we use. It is therefore crucial that both citizens and businesses actively participate in the necessary measures.
