Road safety in the EU

As is well known, the number of accidents in Europe is a hot topic. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives or suffer serious injuries in traffic accidents. In the period from 2010 to 2020, the number of road deaths in Europe was reduced by an impressive 36 percent European Parliament reported. In 2019 the number of traffic deaths was 22,800 - in 2020 there were at least 4,000 fewer.

The latest data from the European Road Safety Observatory (ERSO) shows that the EU average is 42 deaths per 1 million inhabitants, with Sweden having the safest roads with just 18 road fatalities. However, Romania reported the highest rate in 2020, with 85 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants. This shows that despite significant progress, many road safety challenges remain.

The age structure of traffic fatalities

Another interesting point is the age distribution of traffic fatalities. Around 12 percent of those who died in 2018 were between the ages of 18 and 24, although this age group only makes up 8 percent of the population. This could indicate that young people are particularly at risk of becoming accident victims. On the other hand, the number of traffic deaths in this group has fallen by 43 percent since 2010. In contrast, 28 percent of traffic fatalities are over 65 years old, which is a growing problem.

The statistics illustrate how important it is to further improve road safety. The data collected by ERSO is used not only to identify problems, but also to develop effective measures to reduce accidents and serious injuries on EU roads. With such an important issue, it is crucial to work together on solutions to increase safety on our roads.

Overall, the situation remains challenging and while progress has been made, there is still much to be done to further improve road safety in Europe, as reported by ERSO shows. This is a task that concerns us all.
