Power outage in Tübingen: Technical failure causes darkness!
On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, there was a power outage in the Tübingen suburbs of Hirschau and Bühl shortly after 4:42 p.m. The reasons for this were quite classic: a defect in a power cable in the 20 kV network of the Tübingen municipal utility (swt). According to the municipal utility, material fatigue caused a short circuit in the cable, which resulted in the power supply being interrupted for around 45 minutes. Full power restoration finally occurred at 6:03 p.m., when the municipal utility's technical team completed a series of necessary switchovers to bring those affected back online. During this time, construction work in the medium-voltage network also took place, which required the municipal utilities to react quickly.
In order to determine the exact location of the defect, the swt technical service team immediately initiated repair work. They were able to quickly locate the location that was responsible for the failure and thus quickly shed light on the situation for the residents. Although such incidents seem relatively rare, electricity supply in the region is always a sensitive issue.
Statistics on power outages in Tübingen
The current statistics show that a total of two power outages have been recorded in Tübingen so far in 2025. The surrounding communities were also affected. Kusterdingen reported an outage, while Ammerbuch was affected by electricity three times. 2024 was particularly active, with a total of 16 outages in Tübingen. A look at the statistics shows the following distribution:
| Community | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Kusterdingen | 1 failure | 1 failure |
| Ammerbuch | 3 failures | 22 failures |
| Tübingen | 2 failures | 16 failures |
| Rottenburg am Neckar | 5 failures | 15 failures |
The data also shows that the issue is not just a local challenge. Power outages often affect industrial processes and can have far-reaching consequences. The complexity of modern power supply has increased in recent years. Factors such as extreme weather conditions, increasing electricity demand and, last but not least, consumer behavior contribute to the fragility of the network infrastructure. The need to increasingly ensure supplies from renewable energies also represents a challenge that goes hand in hand with changes in the infrastructure, such as bpb reported.
In order to be prepared for these challenges, close cooperation between the electricity industry, regulators and political decision-makers is necessary. These measures could help prevent cascading power outages, such as those that have occurred in North America in the past. The goal remains to ensure a reliable and trouble-free power supply in the future.
