Young cyclists conquer the challenge: from Germany to Morocco!
The journey of Max Grillenberger and Mario Denzel began on July 4, 2025 and is not only a performance-oriented bike tour, but also an adventure full of challenges and unforgettable experiences. The two friends, aged around 20, had the idea of traveling to Morocco by bike during the Corona period, inspired by their previous tour to Rome in the summer of 2023. Their minimalism was reflected in the preparation: Grillenberger, who had little experience in racing cycling, got a racing bike shortly before the tour and both organized their route with the help of apps like Komoot and Bikerouter. They found overnight accommodation mainly via the “Warm Showers” platform or Airbnb.
They had prepared well to ensure that the trip went well, even if it only lasted one day. Her luggage included a racing bike outfit, a change of clothes, soap, toothbrushes, a first aid kit and spare tubes. But traveling was not without hurdles: During their journey they crossed Spain until they finally reached Morocco after a ferry crossing in Algeciras. They covered an average of 130 kilometers and 1000 meters of altitude per day. But the physical strain left its mark. Grillenberger complained of back pain, which he attributed to the racing bike not fitting perfectly.
The challenges along the way
The journey was not only characterized by long distances, but also by technical challenges. The cyclists had a total of three flat tires and had to urgently organize new coats on the penultimate day. Luckily, a taxi driver helped them find a bike shop and also translated for them. Despite the physical exertion and occasional mishaps, they didn't skimp on food - it was an important part of the trip for them and also the point at which they spent the most money.
When they arrived in Rabat, the two were exhausted but overwhelmed with relief and happiness at having reached their destination. After the bike tour, they treated themselves to a three-day desert tour to round off their adventure in Morocco. Their bikes were returned via a transport service while they fully enjoyed the beauty of the desert.
A look at bikepacking in Morocco
As cycloscope.net describes, Morocco is a popular destination for cyclists and adventurers. Security is generally high, but caution is advised in certain regions, particularly Fez. The best travel times for cyclists are spring and autumn, as the summer months are rather unsuitable due to the high temperatures. There are numerous routes open to cyclists, from the coast to the impressive Atlas Mountains, offering challenges and breathtaking views.
With a well-functioning road infrastructure and the possibility of transporting bicycles on long-distance buses, Morocco is a paradise for cycling lovers. If you are interested in the topic, you will find numerous guides and reports from other adventurers on the Internet. The diversity of Moroccan cuisine, from fresh fish on the coast to delicious tagines and Berber omelettes, also promises culinary highlights.
Grillenberger and Denzel not only experienced a private adventure with their trip, but also gained valuable experience, which they now share with others in their blog.
