A summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Alaska today, August 16, 2025. Expectations for this diplomatic encounter are rather muted, especially among the Ukrainian communities in southern Baden. Oksana Vyhovska, the chairwoman of the German-Ukrainian Society in Freiburg, is not very optimistic: "The meeting achieved nothing. The result was as expected: zero," she said. Their concerns are directed at the seriousness of the summit, which many perceive as having more media impact than actual significance. When discussing negotiations with Putin, Ukrainian representatives believe that he should not be treated as a partner. “Talks should be with Ukraine and not about Ukraine,” explains Vyhovska. At the same time, she points out how important it is not to give up hope. This seems to be a necessary attitude given the tense situation.
