Ukrainian voices from Freiburg: Summit between Trump and Putin remains fruitless
A summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place in Alaska today, August 16, 2025. Expectations for this diplomatic encounter are rather muted, especially among the Ukrainian communities in southern Baden. Oksana Vyhovska, the chairwoman of the German-Ukrainian Society in Freiburg, is not very optimistic: "The meeting achieved nothing. The result was as expected: zero," she said. Their concerns are directed at the seriousness of the summit, which many perceive as having more media impact than actual significance. Why do we have to ask ourselves whether Putin understands what Ukraine is going through?
In the current situation, Russian missiles continue to fly into Ukraine during the meeting. Svitlana Los even describes Putin as an “international war criminal.” The emotional reactions of the Ukrainian refugees are understandable. They want nothing more than to be able to live in their homeland. “I want to live with my family in Ukraine,” says Anna Fitkovska. The drive for peace is undermined by the constant threat of further conflict.
demands and hopes
When discussing negotiations with Putin, Ukrainian representatives believe that he should not be treated as a partner. “Talks should be with Ukraine and not about Ukraine,” explains Vyhovska. At the same time, she points out how important it is not to give up hope. This seems to be a necessary attitude given the tense situation.
Science and the great unknown
If the world focuses not only on summits but also on scientific discoveries, it may have a better chance of peace and understanding. Today, more than ever, we realize that both diplomatic and scientific dialogues are essential to address humanity's complex problems. An outlook on SWR Aktuell Baden-Württemberg on the situation in Freiburg and Ukraine will be broadcast in the evening at 7:30 p.m.
