From 2026: Less garbage fees for municipalities in the Neu-Ulm district!

In a recent decision, the works committee of the Neu-Ulm district decided on measures to adjust the waste fee regulations, which will apply in eleven municipalities from January 1, 2026. The significant changes were announced on June 29, 2025 and promise citizens lower fees. This good news is no coincidence, as the general conditions have noticeably improved as a result of a reduced calculation period from three to two years. Ulm News reports that the surplus of around 12 million euros, which was generated through high revenues from the waste-to-energy plant, is now being reduced more quickly.

Another important point is the reduction in the minimum emptying times from twelve to eight per year, which is particularly beneficial for households with smaller amounts of waste. The conversion of the recycling center in Illertissen into a second disposal center has been canceled and the opening times remain the same. District Administrator Eva Treu expressed her satisfaction with the flexibility that had been decided. She announced that the new fee approach will be critically reviewed from 2026, including the possibility of comparing alternative fee systems. A possible new change could be considered as early as 2028.

Trash fee adjustments in Munich

Almost at the same time as the Neu-Ulm resolutions, there are also significant adjustments to garbage fees in Munich. Loud AWM Munich Fees are increasing due to increased personnel costs, the introduction of the Fuel Emissions Trading Act and the regulation of the market for recyclable materials, which have been in decline in recent years due to unstable prices. For an 80 liter residual waste container that needs to be emptied every 14 days, the increase is 1.56 euros.

The garbage fees in Munich are cheap compared to the surrounding area, and a comprehensive full service is offered. This includes, among other things, emptying the residual waste bin, collecting organic waste at no additional cost and using the municipal recycling centers. Waste advice and environmental education are also part of the service, which is an advantage for many households.

Changes in waste disposal

In addition, from January 1, 2025, in many cities, including Neu-Ulm, it will be possible to choose the size and number of garbage cans as required. The obligation to connect residual waste and organic waste bins remains, while if you do your own composting you can do without an organic waste bin. The collection frequency for residual and organic waste will generally be every 14 days, with the paper bin being emptied every 4 weeks Eva Waste Disposal reported.

The organized tips for avoiding waste offer a small potential for savings: If households avoid waste and separate it consistently, they can switch to smaller bins, which also leads to lower fees. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the remaining municipalities and whether citizens will accept the new systems. The first citizen information events will take place on June 27th and 28th, 2025 to clarify any questions that arise.

The letter of need for property owners is expected to be sent out in mid to late July. Stay tuned for the latest information on waste disposal in your county!
