Construction begins for Ulm-Dornstadt: Europe's most modern transshipment station is being built!

The starting signal for the expansion of the Ulm-Dornstadt transshipment station was given on Monday. A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony launched a project that will more than double the station's capacity. Loud SWR The aim is to divert more than 300,000 containers from road to rail every year. This is in line with the Federal Government's efforts to achieve energy and climate policy targets.

Berthold Huber, Head of Infrastructure at Deutsche Bahn AG, described the new transshipment station as the “most modern transshipment station in Europe”. This state-of-the-art terminal will be able to unload and distribute containers fully automatically. The aim is not only to make freight transport more efficient, but also to reduce noise emissions through digital control.

Sustainability in focus

An important goal of the expansion is to save 16,790 tons of CO2 annually compared to pure truck traffic. This is achieved through a targeted shift in the transport of containers, which has stagnated at around 20% in rail freight transport in Germany since the 1990s ( BMDV ). The project has been part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 since 2016, which makes it an urgent need.

The environmental legal considerations deserve particular mention. In order to protect the landscape and nature during construction work, a comprehensive environmental impact study (EIS) was carried out. This underlines that impacts on people, animals, plants, water and even the landscape must be taken into account ( umschlagbahnhoefe.de ).

Local challenges

The expansion of the terminal is expected to last until 2028, a process with long-term implications for the entire region and beyond. It is clear here: the future of freight transport should not only be efficient, but also sustainable.
