Swearing weekend in Ulm: Fishing jousting thrills on July 18, 2025!

An iconic event is just around the corner: the fishing jousting in Ulm will take place on July 18th and 20th this year. This traditional festival has a long history that goes back to the 16th century and combines masterful skill with a lot of cheerful atmosphere. How SWR reports, the Swearing Weekend in Ulm begins today, an event that will put the city in a party mood throughout July.

On Friday, July 18th, the academic graduation ceremony of the University of Ulm starts at 3:00 p.m. on Münsterplatz. From 3:30 p.m., the opening dance on the Saumarkt enchants the audience, followed by a parade through the city center to the Danube. Traditionally there are drumming, flag-waving and music groups as well as dancing white fishermen and people in historical costumes who loosen up the atmosphere.

Unique tradition

The fishing jousting itself begins at around 7:00 p.m. and is a thrilling duel on the Danube. Two Stecher-Zills, each with three riders, try to push themselves into the water with a 2.80 meter long lance. The winner stays dry, while a draw result is determined if the score remains the same. With a legend inspired by two Ulm fishermen, Käßbohrer and Molfenter, this event fascinates not only the locals but also numerous tourists. The first written mention comes from a council minutes from 1545, such as Augsburger Allgemeine summarizes.

Additionally enriched by diverse characters such as the “White Fisherman”, jester, farmer’s wife and tailor from Ulm, the festival reflects the early modern urban carnival. These traditional figures wear white robes that pay homage to the origins of carnival stabbing, such as Ulm.de explained.

A colorful program

The program for the Swearing Weekend is particularly varied this year. In addition to the fishing jousting, a Mallorca party on the Danube island of Schwal is also planned from 5 p.m. On Saturday, July 19th, visitors can look forward to a swearing concert in the Protestant Pauluskirche at 6:00 p.m. and a light serenade with fireworks at 10:15 p.m.

Sunday brings more festive atmosphere to the city with the opening dance and a parade starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by the entry of the fishermen at 4:00 p.m. And then the highlight: Don't miss the grand finale of the Fischerstich from 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.! Finally, on Monday, the ceremonial swearing-in speech will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the Weinhof, followed by the traditional ringing of the swearing bell at the cathedral at 12:00 p.m.

Tickets and prices

If you want to secure the best seats, you should get your tickets in good time. The price for a seat in the stands is 20 euros (reduced 17 euros), on the wooden steps it costs 17 euros (reduced 14 euros) and on the embankment it costs 10 euros (reduced 8 euros).
