Ulm tackles: Karlsplatz becomes safer, cleaner and more child -friendly!

AM Karlsplatz in Ulm is doing something - and that is urgently needed! Not only the beautiful sun draws many families to this popular meeting place, but unfortunately also problems with certainty and cleanliness that have been piling up in the past few months. Parents in particular are concerned about the condition of the playing areas, where alcohol and drug use is always observed. Reports about garbage deposits, even injections on the playgrounds, strengthen the worries, and fewer and fewer families are focusing on this place that was once a heart of the city.

The city of Ulm has recognized the Situation and reacts with an action plan that is supposed to make Karlsplatz safer, cleaner and livable. Mayor Martin Ansbacher obtains the citizens: inside and wants to bundle their worries and ideas in conversations. In order to develop the best measures, on-site dates are also planned, in which the municipal regulatory service and the police are also represented in addition to the city administration.

strategies for improvement

By discussions with the citizens, a comprehensive concept is created that not only improves existing measures, but also introduces new approaches. The city even checks the establishment of a drug consumption room to relieve public space and reduce health risks for consumers, which is considered a step in the right direction by experts. The increased controls of the security forces on Karlsplatz, which have been in action since the end of June, are also to be expanded. The municipal security service has already carried out around 30 missions in the past few weeks and will continue to intensify this in the future.

As the city administration indicates, the disposal of waste is also reinforced. Disposal companies Ulm are planning to expand the cleaning intervals and ensure that the place remains properly. The neighborhood social work also contributes to improving the offer at Karlsplatz, not least with weekly game campaigns for children who are supposed to increase the quality of stay.

collaboration for more security

The close cooperation between the city and the police headquarters will be expanded to improve the security situation at other critical points such as the station forecourt or in the Lederhof. In a meeting, the local council has already unanimously decided to strengthen the feeling of security of the citizens, including an increased presence of law enforcement officers in the city center.

The further measures include the introduction of a weapon and knife ban zone that comes into force in 2024. The garbage situation is also to be improved by doubling the fines from July 1, 2025. By 2029, twelve additional positions are to be created in the city cleaning, which will work in close coordination with the population and the “Life in the trash” project. Citizens can look forward to a modern area cleaning machine that is to be used from 2026.

The action plan for Karlsplatz is only part of a larger whole. The focus of increasing the quality of life in Ulm is supported by numerous actions, such as the planned flea market in autumn and other offers from the Children's and Family Center Schaffnerstrasse.

The next steps are clear: an exchange with the population, regular checks and innovative concepts should ensure that Karlsplatz becomes a place again where families can feel safe and comfortable. So it is up to all of us to accompany this process positively.
