Fire brigade exercise at Hohenzollern Castle: Fire simulated in the bedroom!
On October 18, 2025, an impressive exercise by the fire brigades from Bisingen and Grosselfingen took place at the picturesque Hohenzollern Castle. In a realistic scenario, a fire was simulated in a bedroom at the Kira Foundation on the third floor. Confused visitors were amazed as the event took place in the middle of the castle's normal operations. Commander Marc Mayer emphasized that the exercise also took into account the challenges posed by tourist flows and presented a realistic level of complexity. A good 90 firefighters and five emergency services from the DRK Bisingen actively pitched in to complete the exercise. The simulation not only showed the emergency, but also the need for effective cooperation and comprehensive fire protection.
A central aspect of the exercise was the first use of the new turntable ladder, which was specifically designed to support firefighters wearing breathing masks. This technological innovation is an important step in increasing the safety of emergency services in the event of a fire. The DRK also took care of the simulated treatment of an “injured” firefighter, which further underlined the realistic nature of the exercise. Castle master Jan Sonnleitner led the preparation of the exercise and informed that in an emergency, bus traffic from the parking lot would be stopped in order to bring the fire engines into the castle courtyard as quickly as possible.
Security and fire protection at Hohenzollern Castle
What actually happens in the event of a fire at the castle? In the event of a real fire, visitors would be asked to evacuate to the beer garden, which serves as a gathering point. The castle has several cisterns - including under the castle courtyard and near the Christ Chapel - which provide a total of around 600 cubic meters of water. Sophisticated structural fire protection ensures that fires and smoke cannot spread unhindered. Among other things, partition walls and classified fire protection barriers are used, which enable quick and uncomplicated extinguishing work.
The exercise also tested techniques for automatic hose laying. On top of that, if necessary, a water pipe could be laid in the direction of Hechingen - all of this contributes to the castle's comprehensive security concept. This proactive approach to fire protection shows that you not only react to possible emergencies, but are also prepared for them in the best possible way.
A holistic fire protection concept is essential to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Structural fire protection forms the basis for ensuring both the rescue of people and the minimization of destruction and damage to buildings in the event of an emergency. When it comes to fire protection, prevention is better than cure.
