JSG Balingen-Weilstetten celebrates world championship triumph in handball!

A historic moment for German handball! On November 2, 2025, the German U17 national team, led by the talents Kalle Gaugisch, Fritz Henselek and Lenn Strobel from JSG Balingen-Weilstetten, won the Handball World Championship in Casablanca, Morocco. The team defeated Egypt 44:43 after overtime in the exciting final. After regular time the score was 37:37, which increased the tension immeasurably.

How did this thrilling finale come about? Egypt qualified for the final with a 31:28 win against Spain. In the game itself, the Egyptians really turned up the heat at the beginning and were leading 14:12 at one point. However, Germany held on and ended the first half with a narrow 18:17. In the second period, the German deficit fell to 23:27, but the team fought back and finally equalized to 37:37 through Kalle Gaugisch, who scored the decisive goal just three seconds before the end and saved the team into overtime.

The path to championship

The World Cup was a thoroughly successful performance for Germany's young talent. The team already impressed with clear victories in the preliminary round: the matches against Iran (45:20), Puerto Rico (54:15) and Argentina (44:22) were all extremely positive. They didn't miss a beat in the semifinals either and beat Qatar 39:22. Winning the title is the first U17 world championship title in the history of German handball, a real anniversary!

The emotional climax of course came in the final, when Germany took the lead 39:37 in extra time and held it until the end, while Egypt tried with all their might to get back into the game, but ultimately couldn't get past 44:43. The national coach Markus Gaugisch, who is also Kalle's father, was visibly touched by this triumphant success.

The spectators in the Salle Couverte Nouaceur in Casablanca, where around 1,000 fans watched the final, experienced a handball game that got worse with each match. With a total of six penalty minutes for Germany and eight for Egypt, the duel was tough but fair. The game was officiated by referees Guilherme Goncalves (Brazil), Tatsuro Murata (Japan) and Zan Puksic (Slovenia).

The successes of the German teams in 2025 will continue: This championship title for the U17 follows the European Championship gold for the U19 women and the World Cup gold for the U19 men, who also showed outstanding performances this year.
