Friedberg's cyclists are thrilled: 420,000 kilometers for a greener climate!
There was once again a lot of pedaling in the town of Friedberg and the surrounding area. This year's CITY CYCLING and school cycling took place from May 17th to June 6th, 2025, and the numbers speak for themselves: participants covered a total of almost 420,000 kilometers, which theoretically corresponds to 10.5 trips around the equator. This pleasing result was achieved with 2,336 cyclists (200 more than in the previous year), which shows that interest in cycling in the region is constantly growing. According to lra-aic-fdb.de, the campaign saved a remarkable 68.8 tons of CO2 compared to using cars with combustion engines.
With a total of 103 teams, consisting of both schools and cycling communities, a real competition for the most kilometers covered was created. What is particularly pleasing is the participation of 19 schools, five more than last year, with 1,501 committed students. They covered 190,503 kilometers alone, which accounts for around 45% of the total distance. The best schools were recognized for school cycling, which has been carried out annually since 2015 as part of the “Better to School” initiative. The first three places went to outstanding performances:
- 1. Platz: Staatliche Realschule Mering mit 35.691 Kilometer und 300 Euro Preisgeld (227 Teilnehmende)
- 2. Platz: Wittelsbacher Realschule Aichach mit 24.190 Kilometer und 200 Euro Preisgeld (151 Teilnehmende)
- 3. Platz: Mittelschule Kissing mit 18.814 Kilometer und 100 Euro Preisgeld (117 Teilnehmende)
The best cyclists and teams in CITY CYCLING
But it wasn't just the schools that were able to shine. Impressive performances were shown in the general category of CITY CYCLING. Here are the top rankings for most kilometers:
- Meiste Kilometer: Radsportclub Aichach (27 Radelnde, 14.289 Kilometer)
- Genussradler Friedberg (38 Radelnde, 11.678 Kilometer)
- Groaß Loamaring (25 Radelnde, 11.063 Kilometer)
For the most kilometers per team member, Kloa Loamaring was at the top with 1,173 kilometers, followed by Radl-Liebe Mering (876 kilometers) and the Kroisi family (850 kilometers). The best individual performances were achieved by Daniel Vyskocil (2,820 kilometers), Hans Treffler (2,729 kilometers) and Georg Treffler (2,707 kilometers).
Importance of cycling infrastructure
At the closing event, Mayor Florian Mayer emphasized that taking part in such campaigns also offers the opportunity to report deficiencies in the cycling infrastructure. A great opportunity to work together to make cycling even more enjoyable and safe. The event ended with a friendly exchange with drinks and snacks, and everyone is already looking forward to the next editions of CITY CYCLING and school cycling in 2026.
The initiative to promote cycling remains an important topic that not only promotes climate protection, but also the exercise and health of citizens. A current study by the ADFC even shows that Germany could triple the proportion of cycling traffic by 2035 if the appropriate measures are taken to improve the cycling infrastructure. These findings underscore the need for cities to create safe and comfortable cycle paths, as adfc.de reports.
