Health Forum Aichach: Regional strategies for mental well-being!

The 6th Health Forum took place in the Aichach-Friedberg district in October, led by District Administrator Dr. Klaus Metzger. This event promoted exchanges about regional health projects and future initiatives. Topics ranged from mental health to care innovations and support for older people. Particularly interesting was the project group that focused on the mental health of children and young people and took part in the MUT tour in July, a nationwide campaign to destigmatize mental illnesses. Aichach-Friedberg district reports.

Another team from the forum dealt with the important topic of “living in old age”, which focused on strengthening local support structures for seniors. One of the successes was the “Because We Care” care and health congress, which took place at the beginning of January in the Augsburg network and attracted attention with around 800 participants. In May, the “TruDi – Truck of Digitalization” was on the road in Wittelsbacher Land to provide information about digital innovations in care facilities. The competition “Your training in the spotlight – show what you learn” is currently running, in which trainees can submit articles about their health professions.

Mental health in focus

A central point that was also discussed is the mental health of seniors. Interestingly, it was only in June 2024 that a 25-page dossier was published by the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which addressed the risk factors of mental illness and outlined relief measures from various countries. Approximately 30% of European seniors suffer from depression, an increase that has been particularly exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and loneliness. Senior policy currently reported.

The taboo surrounding mental suffering often leads to many people remaining untreated. Against this background, UNECE calls on governments to do more to promote needs-based support services. Protective factors for the psyche include a stable social environment, a regular income and a healthy lifestyle. The disease rates vary considerably in Europe and show the need for close cooperation between governments, project sponsors and relatives.

The importance of enlightenment

A strategy against loneliness has been pursued in Germany for some time, which can also be understood as part of a national mental health agenda. The European Commission and WHO have also developed reports and strategies to improve the quality of life of older people. The BAGSO advice program on the mental health of caring relatives is an important step in the right direction.

Another topic in the context of health education is the correct handling of medical information such as the Medicare card. Similar to a credit card, this should always be treated securely. Information about services should only be shared with trusted healthcare providers to prevent possible fraud attempts. Medicare provides some safety tips on this.

Finally, the shows
The event once again shows how important exchange and regional cooperation in the health sector are. Strengthening support structures and mental health education are essential to supporting older people and improving their quality of life.
