Discover the food culture: guided tour at BIMO on November 14th!
This weekend, more precisely on November 14, 2025, there is something very special to experience at the East Bavaria Mining and Industrial Museum (BIMO). At 3:30 p.m., a public tour of the new permanent exhibition “The Way of Life and the Enjoyment of the Table” begins, which will be a real treat not only for those interested in history. Local guide Cornelia Platz will guide the participants through the exhibition and provide exciting insights into the food culture and table customs of the Upper Palatinate, Upper Franconia and Bohemia. The tour lasts around one and a half hours and costs just 6 euros per person. This opportunity also showcases how beautifully laid tables reflect the way of life of bygone times, and it's worth marveling at the variety of glass, porcelain and earthenware pieces on display.
Mining, in which the museum specializes, has a long and impressive history dating back to the Stone Age. How Wikipedia explains, it is an economic sector that deals with the exploration and extraction of mineral resources. The topics discussed in this exhibition are by no means obscure. Mining is not only part of the economic backbone of many regions, but also constantly influences social structures. The mallet and iron, the symbol of mining, represents the hard-earned influence and culture that is associated with it.
Cultural connections in BIMO
The exhibition “Lifestyle and Enjoyment of the Table” goes far beyond mining and shows how the raw materials extracted from the earth have shaped people’s lives. The importance of mining has changed over the last few centuries, and the exhibition at BIMO is the perfect place to understand this development. Mining is not just an industrial sector, but rather a part of Germany's cultural heritage and shows how society has developed in the face of technical and social challenges.
Last but not least, mining has been regulated over the centuries by strict national regulations, such as the Federal Mining Act in Germany, combined with the associated environmental protection and safety issues. Here the visitor gains an exciting insight into an industry that is traditionally confronted with many challenges, be it social conflicts or environmental aspects. This way you can consciously experience and understand the complex relationship between humans and nature.
