Carnival start in Amberg: New prince couples and town hall keys handed over!

On November 11th at 11:11 a.m. the starting signal for the Amberg carnival season 2026 was given in the historic town hall of Amberg. Mayor Michael Cerny took this celebratory ceremony as an opportunity to hand over the town hall key to the new president of the Narrhalla Rot-Gelb, Tanja Weigl. This initiated the anticipation of the colorful and exuberant hustle and bustle that will characterize the fifth season in Amberg. Because as oberpfalzecho.de reports, the small town hall was well filled with city councilors, guests of honor and representatives of the Narrhalla.

In his speech, Cerny paid tribute to the long-time club president Jürgen Mühl, who led the club's fortunes from 2004 to 2025 and will now be there as honorary president. This festive day was greeted with a warm, triple “Amberg-oho!” The official starting signal was given, which infected those present with spirit and joy. The new prince couples were also introduced at the event: Claudia Potschigmann with Jürgen Windisch and the child prince couple Romy Müller alias Romy I. and Max Windisch alias Max II.

Traditions and customs in carnival

What really makes carnival special? In Germany, spring begins the fifth season, which in many ways has a connection to culture and traditions. These customs, which were formed during carnival, carnival or carnival, have a strong regional influence. We learn from perfekt-deutsch.de that the term “Carnival” is mainly used in the Rhineland, for example in Cologne and Düsseldorf, while “Fasching” is mainly found in Bavaria, Saxony and Austria.

The origins of these celebrations are complex and go back far into history. Whether they come from Christian traditions or pagan rituals remains an exciting topic to this day. Traditions such as the Cologne Trinity and the Rose Monday procession are particularly widespread in the Rhineland. In Bavaria, however, the “Haberfeldtreib” captivates people, while the Swabian-Alemannic carnival impresses with its artistically carved wooden masks.

  • Fasching: vor allem in Bayern, Sachsen und Österreich
  • Karneval: Rheinland (Köln, Düsseldorf, Mainz)
  • Fastnacht: Hessen, Baden-Württemberg, Schweiz

Music plays a central role during carnival. Whether traditional carnival songs or the latest hits from pop singers – the melodies create an atmosphere of joy of life. Carnival is not just a festival, but an expression of regional culture that connects people and creates a sense of community.
