Pompejanum: Last chance for exhibition and captivating lecture!
The special exhibition “Inspiration Pompeii – 175 years of the interior of the Pompejanum” ends on October 31, 2025 in Johannisburg Castle in Aschaffenburg. This presentation has turned out to be a real highlight in recent weeks and takes an exciting look at the ancient influences in the region. On this occasion, there will be a lecture by Florian Hasen Knopf, an expert at the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate. The title of his lecture is “Ludwig’s Italian-style villa in the mildest part of the kingdom: Villa Ludwigshöhe Palace”. The lecture starts at 6:30 p.m., admission starts at 6 p.m., and participation is free - a real bargain for those interested!
But what is the special exhibition about? This celebrates the 175th anniversary of the interior of the Pompejanum, the impressive replica of a Roman villa that was commissioned by King Ludwig I between 1843 and 1850. The Pompejanum, designed by architect Friedrich von Gärtner, is a reproduction of the Dioscuri's villa in Pompeii and reflects the Roman lifestyle and the architecture of ancient Rome. As part of the exhibition, not only can you admire the designs for wall and ceiling paintings, mosaics and furniture, but also interesting excavation finds from Pompeii, including numerous silver objects, which will be on display until the end of the month.
Insights into the history of Pompejanum
The Pompejanum is an impressive example of the enthusiasm that people felt for ancient culture in the 19th century. It is picturesquely situated on a steep bank of the Main and is surrounded by a small Mediterranean garden that was created in the 19th century. The building is not only considered an architectural masterpiece, but also a place where the auditorium and culture meet - a kind of art temple for all lovers of antiquity.
After heavy bombardment during World War II, the Pompejanum underwent extensive restoration over many years to restore the destroyed murals and other works of art. With various stages of renovation that began in 1960, the rooms of the Pompejanum now shine in new splendor. In particular, the Roman works of art from the State Antique Collections and the Glyptothek Munich, which have been on display there since 1994, give the place a very special touch.
