FC Augsburg sets standards: Sustainability for the WWK ARENA!
The world of football is often about more than just the game on the pitch. FC Augsburg proves that environmental protection and social responsibility can go hand in hand with sporting success. Today, November 10, 2025, it is clear that the club is at the forefront when it comes to sustainability. According to the information from FC Augsburg, the club is registered according to the EMAS regulation and meets the requirements of DIN EN ISO 14001:2015. This not only affects the WWK ARENA, but also the office as well as the training grounds and other areas.
EMAS stands for the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme and requires organizations to continually review and improve their environmental performance. Important aspects such as energy consumption, waste management and CO2e emissions are recorded and analyzed. FC Augsburg's focus is on stadium operations with the aim of further developing the WWK ARENA as a safe, energy-efficient and climate-resilient venue.
Sustainability as a matter of the heart
"Build bridges. Move people. Protect the environment." This is the ambitious claim of FC Augsburg, which summarizes the cornerstones of the sustainability strategy. The goal is to motivate young people to exercise while having a positive impact on the environment. Fors.earth emphasizes that promoting sustainable water management plays a central role.
In collaboration with the city of Augsburg, the association is planning several future-oriented projects. This includes the establishment of a daycare center with a focus on exercise and reforestation measures in a municipal forest area. We are also working on water projects to raise awareness of clean drinking water. The FCA cooperates with, among others, Pure Water for Generations e.V. and holds water days in schools - an initiative that underlines the association's social responsibility.
Responsibility for the future
Beyond the individual projects, FC Augsburg shows that environmental protection is an integral part of the club's identity. Employees are actively involved in the improvement process in order to develop new ideas for making processes more environmentally conscious. Felix Jäckle, Head of the Strategic Projects & Sustainability Department, explains the importance of EMAS registration for the association's sustainability management.
The results from the materiality analysis, which was carried out together with fors.earth, are particularly important. It highlights which topics are of great importance to the FCA, with a clear focus on water. This is particularly notable as Augsburg has a UNESCO World Heritage water management system.
At a time when climate change brings with it global challenges, FC Augsburg shows that football clubs can also act as role models when it comes to sustainability. The soccer world can learn from these initiatives and perhaps learn a lesson from them. With their commitment, the people of Augsburg make a valuable contribution to environmental protection and thus move not only their supporters, but also society as a whole.
