Peace Cup in Augsburg: joy and exciting duels at the boules event!

The second Augsburg Peace Cup took place on August 24, 2025, organized by the TSG Augsburg Lechhausen boules department, which is well-known in the region. In bright weather but also high temperatures, 80 participants set off to play exciting games in four rounds of doubles. The organizers created a special atmosphere because the games took place not only on the classic boules courts, but also on parking lots and cinder tracks, which provided additional variety. Many players traveled from all over the region, including from Kempten and Munich, and would also like to see away teams from places like Zöschlingsweiler and Dornstadt near Oettingen. Particularly noteworthy was the strong presence of players from Königsbrunn and Friedberg, and even a team from northern Germany was there, although not specifically for the Peace Cup.

The department head, Dr. Gesine Foerster, warmly welcomed all participants and made it clear that the aim of the event was not only the sporting competition but also fun, encounters and peaceful coexistence. The “Supermelée” game format allowed players to draw new partners each round. This encouraged both exchange and competitive spirit, ensuring that newcomers were pitted against experienced players.

The winners and special features of the tournament

In the midst of the hot temperatures, not only were the players required to perform at their best, the spectators also got their money's worth. Finally, it was Michele Salerno from Germering near Munich who was crowned winner of the tournament by playing all four games undefeated. Second place was shared by Ludwig Schneider from Königsbrunn, who performed admirably at the age of 85, and Dr. Christoph Siebert from ASV Sindelsdorf, both tied on points. Last year's winner Toni Steinbrecher took fourth place this year.

The participants expressed a special wish when they contacted Dr. Foerster approached and expressed their wish to take part in this wonderful meeting again next year. From an organizational perspective, Dr. Foerster decided to have the Peace Cup take place on a Saturday next year in order to give even more players the opportunity to take part.

Peace festival and boules sport in Augsburg

Interestingly, the event took place on August 8th, the day of the Augsburg Peace Festival. This underlines the motto that the boules department follows: “Have a nice day with friends – allez les boules”. The entry fee was a manageable 5 euros per person, and the physical well-being of the participants was also well taken care of: food and drinks were available so that no one had to go hungry. The registration system was straightforward, the balls were provided, and the training could be attended on different days of the week to make it easier for newcomers.

In the broader context, the event can be placed in a rapidly growing network of boules sports activities in Germany, as the DBBPV report. Under the new presidency of Michael John and the committed work of the associations, membership numbers are increasing. There is even talk of more than 1,500 new members, in contrast to other sports clubs that are affected by declining numbers. This shows that the sport of boules continues to be very popular and pleases both veterans and newcomers to the sport.
