Star Hour House opened: A new home for Augsburg's children in need!
An important step for child protection was taken in Augsburg: On July 23, 2025, Mayor Eva Weber opened the first shelter for children under the age of twelve, the Star Hour House. This facility offers up to twelve children taken into care by the youth welfare office a safe retreat where they can experience family support and a regular everyday life. In times when public funding is often cut, the importance of private initiatives to promote child and youth welfare projects is enormous - as is the case Youth welfare portal is emphasized.
The Sternstunden House owes its existence to a successful collaboration between Sternstunden e.V., the city of Augsburg and the child, youth and family welfare agency Augsburg-Hochzoll. These two organizations each invested around 1.5 million euros in the construction, which underlines the shared responsibility for the well-being of children in crisis situations. A very special contribution also came from a private foundation within the “HAUS DER STIFTER – Stiftergemeinschaft der Stadtsparkasse Augsburg”, which donated over 50,000 euros towards the kitchen equipment. This donation is based on the wish of a deceased donor who wanted to leave behind help for the children in Augsburg DAZ Augsburg reported.
A place of security
The Star Hour House is not only intended to provide a roof over their heads, but also to help the children take their first steps out of the crisis in a structured environment. Until now, they were often dependent on on-call foster families or facilities in the surrounding counties, so the accommodation close to home in this new shelter represents a significant improvement.
This project was able to be realized thanks to the initiative and support of the Hochzoll child, youth and family welfare organization and Sternstunden e.V. The commitment of these organizations is a first-class example of what targeted offers of help for children in need can look like. At a time when many such projects are on the brink, the success of this house shows that with a strong community and a good hand you can achieve great things.
Foundations and their role
More and more organizations are recognizing the urgency of supporting projects in child and youth welfare, which is also shown by the Federal Association of German Foundations in its online database with over 26,000 foundations. Some of these are around 7,000 foundations that are specifically active in this area and provide important resources. The financial resources from foundations are indispensable, especially in times when public funds are scarce. Many donors not only commit themselves anonymously, but also associate their personal name with their support in order to promote projects such as the Star Hour House.
The Star Hour House in Augsburg is not only a home for orphaned children, but is also an example of how foundation work can be life-changing. Such initiatives will certainly continue to play a crucial role in combating social hardship and supporting needy children in the future.
