Alpenbus Revolution: New express connection between Murnau and Rosenheim!

There is great anticipation in the region, because the Alpine bus will be officially put into operation on December 14, 2025. This new express bus connection will play a crucial role in mobility between Rosenheim and Murnau. The Alpine bus not only connects the city of Rosenheim with Bad Tölz, but also links Miesbach and Penzberg to create a fast and efficient east-west connection. This is reported by Merkur, although the preparatory work for this project has now taken seven years.

The official opening of the Alpine bus will take place under the leadership of Prime Minister Markus Söder, Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter and other district administrators. Söder emphasizes the importance of the project for strengthening local public transport in the tourist sector. The Alpine bus is not only of great relevance for commuters, but also for tourism in the entire region, as described on MVV Munich.

Bus routes, stops and travel times

The Alpine bus is offered in two main lines: The west branch (line X990) runs from Murnau via Bad Tölz and Penzberg, while the east branch (line X380) runs from Bad Tölz via Miesbach to Rosenheim. Good connections are guaranteed with stops in Waakirchen-Rathaus, Gmund-Bahnhof and Ostin. There is also a fast connection (X381) between Bad Tölz and Miesbach, which runs every hour between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. and on weekends from 7 a.m., making it convenient to use. The Munich Transport Association (MVV) will introduce a uniform tariff from January 1, 2026, which will make traveling even easier.

Josef Niedermaier, the district administrator of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, is convinced that the Alpine bus closes a crucial gap in the transport network. In his opinion, it is particularly important to promote mobility in rural areas and ensure that the population can access affordable transport options.

Financial support and future developments

A significant portion of the operating costs will be borne by the Free State of Bavaria, which will cover 65% of the deficit in the first year, up to a maximum of 2.28 million euros. In the coming years, this proportion will steadily decrease, but will remain at 50% from the fourth year. This ensures that the Alpine bus remains economical in the long term.

In addition to the ongoing bus projects, work is being done to increase the attractiveness of public transport as part of the “Bahnautonom Bayern 2029” project. This project aims to test autonomous rail vehicles on less frequented branch lines. The aim is to reduce emissions and promote the seamless integration of means of transport such as e-bikes.

An appeal goes out to all citizens: use the Alpine bus! Public transport in the region can only exist and grow in the long term through strong demand. The Alpine bus is a new, innovative step in mobility that will strengthen the entire region.
