A look behind the scenes: Frauen Union explores the ETA Hoffmann Theater

On June 26, 2025, around 50 women from the FU Bamberg-Land district association were able to take a look behind the scenes of the renowned ETA Hoffmann Theater. This excursion, which took place under the direction of Heiko Panzer, the theater's commercial manager, offered visitors an exciting insight into the organizational processes and the diverse world of the theater.

As soon as they arrived at Schillerplatz, where the theater has stood since it was converted in 1802, the participants could look forward to an educational afternoon. The ETA Hoffmann Theater, which was founded by Julius Reichsgraf von Soden, has a long tradition. So went E.T.A. Hoffmann himself worked there as music director from 1808 to 1813 and incorporated his talent into the performances, including the works of Pedro Calderón de la Barca.

Insights into the theater world

The tour was extremely varied. The ladies not only learned a lot about the history, but also about the theater's various workshops. The demonstration of how costumes, masks and stage sets were made was particularly exciting. Touring the rehearsal stages and the main stage provided new perspectives on the hard work that goes into each performance.

The enthusiasm for the theater was further strengthened by the informative explanations of the work of the actors, the technical management and the assistants. The commitment of the permanent ensemble of 16 actors, under the direction of Sibylle Broll-Pape, sets a strong tone. She has been the first woman to head the company since 2015/16 and is therefore a role model for many.

Social responsibility and art education

The ETA Hoffmann Theater has set itself the task of depicting social developments in society. The diversity and complexity of life are artistically reflected here. The theater serves not only for entertainment, but also for education and the creation of meaning, which is of enormous importance in today's world.

After discovering the theater world, the successful evening came to a convivial end in Café Luitpold. There, impressions of the afternoon were exchanged over good food and stimulating conversations.

Another aspect of theater life was recently recognized with the awarding of the Max Herrmann Dissertation Prize 2024. Dr. Christina Vollmert-Boldt was honored for her dissertation on civic festival culture, a work that delves deeply into the theatrical dimension of our coexistence. The festivals that take place in the theater include the Calderón Festival, which has been held annually since 1973 and bridges the gap between tradition and modernity.

The ETA Hoffmann Theater remains a central place for all those who love and appreciate cultural diversity and social reflection. With its committed actors and a clear view of social challenges, it is a place where art comes to life and touches people.
